jpattison Posted June 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm thinking of specialist camera insurance, as an amateur. With some European travel, in my own car. There are a few recommended companies for an on-line quote, they want you to list each item over £100 ! Just wondering what's the best thing to do.... and have any of you had any bad experiences? Thanks, John

bill Posted June 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2009 Hi John, Mine is on house contents insurance and a pretty comprehensive travel insurance. The thing to watch is value of a single item, and also caveats around how you protect your kit when you travel, and particularly where you leave it - safety deposit boxes, etc. Regards, Bill

kenneth Posted June 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2009 We recently signed up to More Than for our house and contents and I raised the camera question with them and asked, as Leica sell bodies and lenses separately would I be covered on unspecified items under £1500.00 for, say a second hand M6 and a 35mm Summicron asph which together would cost over £1500.00 to replace. They assured me that in the case of this happening I should submit 2 claims, 1 for the body and 1 for the lens. I also asked what would happen if I were to loose my camera bag with everything in it. They said that providing no item would cost more that £1500.00 all items would be covered. I hope this helps
topoxforddoc Posted June 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 22, 2009 Mine's on my household policy too. I sent my insurance broker a list of my kit and asked for 10k cover specified out of the house (DMR, couple of lenses or whatever) - no problem. I think I pay about 2% of the value insured for all risks cover. Charlie
farnz Posted June 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 24, 2009 I have a policy with AUA Insurance, which is reasonable and has a good name as far as I can tell from word of mouth. Fortunately I haven't occasion to claim but they advertise reimbursement at current market value, which in the case of constantly appreciating Leica equipment, seems to be good value. Pete. andybarton Posted June 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica equipment doesn't constantly appreciate in value. Not from where I'm sitting, anyway.
wattsy Posted June 24, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 24, 2009 Leica equipment doesn't constantly appreciate in value. Not from where I'm sitting, anyway. It does when you are insuring on a new-for-old basis and the insurance company expects you to have cover for the current new price.

Fair comment, Andy, my R kit may be bucking the trend too. I suppose I'm referring to M lenses, which represent the major portion of my insured sum. Pete.
