Overgaard Posted June 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been wanting to do an article for a long time on light, and finally got started today. It's about available light, reflectors, silk screens, electrical Arri filmlights and Kino Flo lights. Loads of DMR and Digilux 2 samles. Please comment, suggest stuff to cover on this subject, etc. leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - The Quality of Light [ARRI lamps, reflectors and available light] ARRI ligths Reflectors

SJP Posted June 20, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 20, 2009 Brilliant! Very inspiring & plenty to think about. On first reading my impression is that a reflector is the most useful lighting attribute, being relatively easy to transport & allows filling in with the available light. Also the softness is really nice e.g. the picture of the brother & sister, and the beautiful blond haired woman How much do reflectors cost? Are there good, cheap & nasty versions? The california sunbounce you mention seems very reasonably priced.

Not wishing to hijack this thread in any way, but in a pinch there are many easy to obtain items that can be pressed into service as reflectors. For example a sheet of white paper or some tin foil, can save the day if you don't have the proper tools at hand.

There's a Danish photographer http://www.simonhoegsberg.com who did a whole series of portraits "what are you thinking about" - like 100 or so - by approaching people by a lake and have them hold a silver foil from a normal household under their chin. Looks great and people thought it was fun and different. Thought I like standard systems where I know my materials and what they can do and what they look like. But sometimes, I use a piece of paper or window glass.

daveleo Posted June 24, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 24, 2009 Thorsten very nice work-in-progress, and (as usual) your photos are supreme. it might be helpful if in a few examples, you back away and actually show the reflector / diffuser / lighting setup next to the actual photo. also .... depending on how much detail you want to get into .... you might add some comments about lighting ratios of a few images (f-stop range of the light and shadow over the prime subject). nice article ! I will definitely do that, it's just never been a subject I thought about. But it is now.
