nugat Posted June 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good Night and Good Luck-farewell from nugat I want to say good bye to all users of this forum. Something very unusual happened to me. For the first time in my life since the martial law in Poland in early eighties, my expression was totally censored =cut out in full. I did not use in any of my posts any arguments ad personam, racist, abusive etc etc. I did not use expletives. I can only surmise that's because , in a joking manner I substituted a name of an apparel company (French Connection UK) FCUK for where a swear word would ususally be. Within minutes the post was removed without an explanation. An old admin fogey probably missed the joke. I guess I'm to old too for a victorian kindergarten. I was spending too much time here anyway. Back to real life. To all of you- Good Night and Good Luck. Those in a dire need can reach me at nugat@mac.com. Cheers Piotr __________________ "Mehr Licht..." bobtodrick Posted June 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2009 Now let me guess. In good old North America leaving something like that on a forum can result in the forum owners be open to a liable lawsuit. If this is the case here (which I'm pretty sure it is), are you willing to have your post re-instated on the basis that if a lawsuit is brought forth you'll pay the monies levied? I'm thinking not. Gentleman Villain Posted June 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 19, 2009 Nugat...It's hard for professionals to have certain discussions in forums. It seems that people that are not in the industry often like to argue with people that are in the industry. and can be really annoying sometimes. The best way to deal with it is just to avoid discussion. There is a cliche....Don't argue with a fool lest you become one. If something is getting under your skin just abort the discussion relax and avoid the fcuks But you're right about censorship....I don't know what it's like in Poland but America is turning into a mental concentration camp. We're not even allowed to whisper things anymore...The whole country is made of glass. We can't talk candidly about anything without being accused of racism, bigotry, homophobia, sexism or whatever new thought crime the establishment conjures up. Basically, the only thing that's left to talk about in America is cameras.. lol
chris_tribble Posted June 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 19, 2009 REALLY tempted to ask what the f**k this is all about... When you think of some of the insults that have been traded (stnami where art thou???) on this list, I see know reason why Piotr should be excluded. He's a nice guy - and hey, all Poles are aristocrats (that's why it's always pan i pani) so they should be allowed their little eccentricities... I may be wrong but isn't he going voluntarily as one post of his has been removed ? I haven't read the relevant thread so cannot comment on the case specifically but in my experience I cannot recall disagreeing with the mods, decisions to remove a post and in some cases have thought them too lenient. Given the expressive limitations of communication in a forum such as this I think it goes pretty well and I do not detect a heavy hand.
stunsworth Posted June 20, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 20, 2009 I may be wrong but isn't he going voluntarily as one post of his has been removed ? Yes. If he'd been banned he wouldn't be able to tell us he was going. He posted a message one of the mods mustn't have liked and it was deleted, hence his decision to leave. Guest stnami Posted June 20, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 20, 2009 . "When you think of some of the insults that have been traded (stnami where art thou???)" Beats being a buffoon like you Chris, yea but I don't swear as a rule others do that a lot more............try not to be a loser and a poser as your avatar indicates

stuny Posted June 20, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 20, 2009 Gentleman Villain - In the US I find that I can speak openly on any topic without causing people to respond negatively, including those topics you say are forbidden. What follows is just speculation on my part: I suspect that you might be confusing reactions to subtle and possibly unsubtle actual bigotry compared to open discussions of problems faced by members of those groups you listed. You may have also witnessed subtle or even unsubtle actual bigotry spoken, and perhaps not recognized it, and then saw how people reacted. You might have heard subtle or unsubtle jokes at the expense of one of those groups, thought it funny, and then wondered why people reacted negatively. I see this behavior frequently in virtually any part of the US, but far more frequently in two situations. One is where there is very little cultural, spiritual, racial and sexual preference diversity. The second is where there are people whose earlier years were not spent in the US. A fair example is when a foreign male working for Barbara displayed on his bulletin board a very offensive, sexist cartoon and felt nothing was wrong with it because back home they use those terms all the time and the women don't mind (in fact the women do mind, but their culture frowns on them if they object openly. I base this on discussions I've had with many women from his country). It wasn't until several US women saw it and complained that he took it down. I rather doubt that his mores and attitudes built over 30 years experience in his home country were changed, but he did stop using that language in front of US women. For anyone interested, there is a book from the mid 1960s, The Nature of Prejudice, by Gordon W. Allport that is quite an eye-opener on this topic, and as applicable today as it was 40 years ago. abrewer Posted June 20, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 20, 2009 Nugat, not sure who or what intervened in your posting, but I'm sure you'll find all the mods here very fair-minded and open to discussion of the points you've raised I personally wouldn't raise an eyebrow (I have a friend named "Fuchs") but obviously someone didn't see the humor; or possibly (as non-native English speakers can) misunderstood
roguewave Posted June 20, 2009 Share #14 Posted June 20, 2009 Nugat, I have distant Polish relatives. They would be ashamed at this behavior. Get a tougher skin. You must want to leave this Forum. Running away is just that. If you have something to contribute than do so. Have something you want to learn, do so. Stop crying & look around at the real mess this whole world is in & if this little incident has put such a dent in your sense of self, get a really good size mirror. underground Posted June 20, 2009 Share #15 Posted June 20, 2009 Your a smart photographer!! stick around. Some people have thicker skin than others. Not everyone will like you or me. I don't care if some people don't like me. I can't protect everyone's feelings.
nugat Posted June 21, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted June 21, 2009 THERSITES I will see you hanged, like clotpoles, ere I come any more to your tents: I will keep where there is wit stirring and leave the faction of fools. PATROCLUS: A good riddance. I was really surprised to get so many mails asking me to rethink and then to find at this forum as many well-wishers. Even from people with whom I have disagreed continuously. It would be a shame to ignore this volume of good will and reason, along with the expertise this community brings. My rationale to call it quits rests on the assumption that a publisher has the right to refuse to publish, however I reserve the right to believe that my words did not cross the boundaries of anybody else's freedoms. Alas, we cannot both be right. To some it seems a trifle, to me not so. With the hindsight of a good weekend and all the wise and nice letters I received I agree I might have overreacted. My joke was "specific", maybe not to the taste of the many conservative (don't be afraid to admit it) members here. I am not going to engage though in a futile if pompous defense of the freedom of speech. It has a much more worthy defender in the US Supreme Court whose ruling allows larry flynts to distribute their wares. Out of respect for all those who wrote to me I will remain a happy reader of this publication of opinions, most likely not a contributor for a time to come. The part that I enjoy most about farewell threads is the condescending posters that use it as an opportunity to kick a person while he's supposedly down LOL
