My new APO Summicron 75 ASPH...not up to Leica standards!

This is my new 75 ASPH as I received it yesterday. Something just didn't seem right when I pulled it out of its plastic bag but it took me a couple of seconds to figure out what. You just don't expect a new Leica lens to have such a gross assembly error. Until I saw this lens I would not have believed it was even possible to assemble the aperture ring rotated out of alignment let alone have such an assembly error get out of the factory. I couldn't resist including the Leica inspection certificate in the photo with my new lens. Anybody else seen such a gross error with a new lens?? Mike

This has been reported on the forum once before. I don't recall if it also was the 75mm 'cron though.

Probably a lens assembled on Monday, after a schnapps-filled weekend...... No excuse.

Yikes. It is amazing when such obvious mistakes get through quality checks. I bought a Nikon lens a couple of years ago on which the front bayonet was out of kilter, causing the petals on the lens hood to be misaligned by about 45 degrees. B&H promptly replaced it.

Well, the apeture ring on my brand new 2.5/75 had no impact at all on the diaphragm - despite the said final check. Of course it was repaired under guarantee, but the final inspection check is a joke unfortunately.

Dear Valkyrie,

Thanks for posting this thread on the forum. I am really shocked, that a lens in this condition has left our factory. Please give us the chance to correct this unacceptable error as soon as possible. We are checking our final control process to avoid such mistakes in the future. Would you please be so kind to send this lens to Solms to my personal attention? Thank you very much in advance.

Again, please accept my sincere apologies for this error.

Stefan,

Would you be open to receiving an email or a private mail about the status of my MP after three trips to Leica?

Incidently, other than the pillow over the top, and I have moved the documents, this is how you chose to return the MP 35LuxASPH 75CronASPH to me earlier this year.

Regards

Rob Armstrong.

You could have sent that mail to Leica long ago, Rob, and gotten an adequate response. I went that route a few years ago with a repair of a Digilux2 that went wrong, and got a very good service.

I think we should appreciate that Leica does read our posts - and reacts in a way that no other camera company would.

I don't think I have ever received anything packed with air pillows that did not shift around in the box during shipment. They are a really lousy packing material, in my opinion. We do not use them in our shipping department at work.

Rob, are you saying the camera was damaged in transit? A stout double walled box, air cushions and bubble-wrap, looks fine to me.

Can you imagine the waste disposal problem they have of packaging from users who have gone completely over the top in sending their equipment in?

Look at the bright side you now have a "collectible" that someone will pay you twice the price for to stick it in their closet.
