Advertisement Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Leitax adaptors (R->Nikon). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted June 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 16, 2009 Andy, haven't used one, but you know there's no automatic diaphragm don't you?
mgcd Posted June 16, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 16, 2009 Interesting, I did not know it was possible to adapt R lenses on Nikon. This opens up alternatives instead of just the Canon 5D MKII.
stunsworth Posted June 16, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2009 From the little I know you replace the R mount with the Leitax one, a process that's reversible. There are details here, together with fitting instructions... http://www.leitax.com/leica-lens-for-nikon-cameras.html
andybarton Posted June 16, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted June 16, 2009 Andy, haven't used one, but you know there's no automatic diaphragm don't you? Yes, but that's not a biggie for the sort of stuff I do. Works in Aperture Priority mode, and has focus confirmation And the body is only £1700 Very tempting... RobMac Posted June 16, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 16, 2009 Check the Nikon thread on getdpi. Number of R-Nikon (D700, D3, D3x) users with reports. From all reports it works great, easily reversible and no issues with infinity focus or focus confirmation. Having inspected one of the leitax units first hand, it's well made kit. dhsimmonds Posted June 16, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 16, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I believe that it is also possible to fit some R lenses to the Sony A900 full frame digital with an alternative adaptor...again using stop down aperture and no focus confirmation. Looks as if Andy can't wait for the R10 then!
andybarton Posted June 16, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted June 16, 2009 I played with a D700 in Calumet as I was picking up some HC110 this lunchtime I was very impressed with it, to be honest. A proper viewfinder for a start, not some daft telly pos, and felt good in the hand. And a great price for a ff SLR too Very tempting Can you put old Nikkor primes on it too? (You can see I haven't done much research into this yet )
sdai Posted June 16, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 16, 2009 Can you put old Nikkor primes on it too? (You can see I haven't done much research into this yet ) Depending on how old they are, if you try some pre-Ai lenses on it you could actually break the camera. Nicoleica Posted June 16, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 16, 2009 Depending on how old they are, if you try some pre-Ai lenses on it you could actually break the camera. Nikon used to offer to replace the AI coupling ring with one that had the flip-up AI tab for use with non-AI lenses. I don't know if they still do that. If not, then I believe most non-AI lenses can still be converted to AI.

I've no idea at all whether they're still doing nut for the price they'll like charge for the service, it's simply not worth it.
gyoung Posted June 17, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 17, 2009 Anyone use one on a D700? If so - any feedback you'd care to share? TIA Maybe worth waiting, what if the 'solution' to the R10 demise is a D700 with an R mount on the front? Nikon have allowed Kodak and Fuji to do specials based on their cameras in the past, so I don't think its too far fetched a possibility. Gerry I think some of us have spent many years waiting for Leica to get things done... perhaps there is no time left to wait...
andybarton Posted June 17, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted June 17, 2009 If you have a look in this thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/89060-hessenpark-news-official-no-r10-no-15.html#post937386 You will see that the proposed solution for R users does not involve a mirror and, Leica have real problems with patents for mounts for Japanese cameras (unlike Zeiss, who are Japanese owned). This implies that their relationshiop with anyone other than Panasonic isn't very chummy. That's not to say that Nikon couldn't be persuaded to make a camera with an R mount, but it would be very small beer for them, and probably attract a huge premium. I am very tempted by the D700, I have to say...
pierovitch Posted June 17, 2009 Share #15 Posted June 17, 2009 I use a D700 with R lenses, but only for Macro work. The beautiful original R bellows with a Nikon T mount grafted on the rear then mounted on an Aristophot. Photars and Macro Elmar on the front. Stop down can be done with a cable release. stevelap Posted June 17, 2009 Share #16 Posted June 17, 2009 I've briefly used but not owned a D700. A very nice camera with perhaps the only downside, when compared to the full-size D3/D3x models, being a tad less build quality and a less than 100% viewfinder. You do gain dust-busting and portability (sans grip) though. As a Nikon owner/user I can certainly recommend their products generally, although some of their prime lenses are in need of a refresh for digital, and they are arguably better than most of their competitors in terms of backwards compatibility support. Just a thought, it probably won't be too much longer before a higher resolution D700x/D800 partner for the D3x arrives (if you want to play the waiting game all over again:)). I have to say that I have been impressed by my son's G1, although I personnaly much prefer an optical viewfinder. Gerry
