jaapv Posted June 16, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2009 You mean a bite at Panasonic I agree, it is a nice camera, one step ahead of the DLux4
Steve Ash Posted June 16, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 16, 2009 With the Olympus I very much miss the rangefinder which is the heart of the M8. Also from the sensor point of view it is a downgrade. Regards Steve

comapedrosa Posted June 16, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 16, 2009 If this thing had a EVF* and fast AF** it would be such a winner - despite the 1/2-size sensor. Personally, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Interestingly enough, rumors seem to indicate that either Olympus, Panasonic or Samsung will bring out such a camera relatively soon (I don't know anything other that what I've garnered on the usual sites). *or any good viewfinder with focus confirm and that zooms ** why have AF if it's slow? (i want an upgrade form my D2 )
Iron Flatline Posted June 16, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 16, 2009 I wouldn't mind popping a Viewfinder on the top and putting one of my nice M lenses in front of it. Just something to bring along, and also sticking the kit zoom in the bag. That way my wife can use it, too.
dkCambridgeshire Posted June 16, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 16, 2009 I had a quick look at Olympus Europe's EP-1 video introduction and got so bored with it and the music I switched off ... and then found other better intros which got more to the point. Could Micro Four Thirds render Four Thirds obsolete? ... Distinct possibility IMO especially as regards lens compatibilities. Cheers dunk
guidomo Posted June 16, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 16, 2009 Now why can't one design such a camera with an external EVF to stick on? Get the darn thing of the G1 into an external casing, give the hot shoe the necessary contacts and ... BINGO.
earleygallery Posted June 16, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 16, 2009 Shame Olympus have missed the mark - no optical (or even EVF) viewfinder. OK you can put a finder on the hotshoe, but its not ideal, more costly, not as convenient and then means you can't use flash. M lenses? fine if you are happy with telephoto only. Pass. dkCambridgeshire Posted June 16, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 16, 2009 Shame Olympus have missed the mark - no optical (or even EVF) viewfinder. But have you read this James? British Journal of Photography - Lens-friendly micro ... seems the 50mm Summicron R lens works well enough on the G1 so why not on the EP-1 ? OK it's an R lens but it is cheap as chips compared to an M and results are quoted to be outstanding. Cheers dunk
Sandokan Posted June 16, 2009 Share #14 Posted June 16, 2009 Actually, the 17mm has an optical viewfinder. I must be in the minority as I find the EVF of the G1 fully acceptable until the ambient light gets dark. Ravi
Ecaton Posted June 16, 2009 Share #15 Posted June 16, 2009 As a backup to the M8, it will run circles around the G10s, D-Lux4s and the likes, in every respect! I will get one.
stevelap Posted June 16, 2009 Share #16 Posted June 16, 2009 According to Park Cameras the UK RRP will be £699 inc. Availability "late July".
rob_x2004 Posted June 16, 2009 Share #17 Posted June 16, 2009 ... it will run circles around the G10s, D-Lux4s and the likes ... By what measure?
jaapv Posted June 16, 2009 Share #18 Posted June 16, 2009 It IS an attractive camera, far more so than the G1 imo. And certainly more so than the DLux4, which is closer in concept imo. The only thing we cannot get past are, of course, the small sensor problems with the attendant resolution mismatch between lenses and sensor.
Guest stnami Posted June 16, 2009 Share #19 Posted June 16, 2009 ..........still "oly colours"(please argue) are great
marknorton Posted June 16, 2009 Share #20 Posted June 16, 2009 Lots of G1 detractors here, but at least the camera has a viewfinder, even if it's not to everyone's taste. It's disappointing the Olympus does not have even a basic G10 style viewfinder.
