M8 problem with green corner...

My M8 produced this strange frame with a green patch in the lower right corner.

I'm not sure if it's the 'green line' problem I've heard so much about, since it's more like a square green area in the corner of the frame. It happened for 6-8 frames in a row then seems to have gone away.

Any ideas?

Well, this is not the green line(s) that occurs when a very bright light falls on the frame edge (unless both samples are crops of some amount) since there is no bright light source at the edge.

And it is not the single VERTICAL line (various colors) that appears with some cameras and does require Solms surgery.

What ISO? I get noise banding at 2500 - or under exposures that amount to 2500 when corrected in post - that are roughly like this. Not necessarily green - but the tint could be a result of white-balancing for the highlights. The woman's skin seems a bit greenish in spots, too.

I do see 4-5 stronger lines in the wider version of the image, so it is some kind of banding, not a solid green area.

The wedding photographers here will be able to comment with more authority, but I would say this shot is under-exposed. We know the M8 at high ISO needs to be well exposed to the right, even at the expense of blowing the highlights in an extreme contrast situation like this. At it is, the dress looks pale grey and is the result of the meter taking too much account of it.

The Leica meter is quite basic - Nikon's Matrix Metering it is not - so you have to be ready to dial in some compensation or meter manually in a shot like this.

It was shot at 320 but was definitely a bit underexposed. I always shoot Manual so it's my fault, not the camera meter's fault!

It was only about a stop under, and more than that and the highlights would be blown. So even though it was a shadow area in an underexposed frame, I'm a bit surprised to see that level of banding in this situation.

Anyway, I'm glad it's normal and/or operator error. Thanks for the help.

Is that definitely what it is? Seems a high price to pay for underexposing a frame. What happens if you have larger areas of black when you are shooting in the evening? Can anyone confirm?

Ps...Actually now I am off the iMac and on a half decent screen there is another band running clear across that is pretty easy to see, and others that maybe maybe not along the top. (And its definitly not a DMR file:(.)

I would try another RAW converter if I were you. It shows the jigsaw type of noise too, and that is usually not present in C1.

Agree, also banding with other converters is often less visible with C1.

Again, while I admit the underexposure was my error, I did feel like it was a bad result, and one that I hadn't seen before on the M8. Usually shadow areas look fine without banding at 320 or even 640.

I do use ACR, not C1. I guess it's time to learn C1. I actually tried to install it the other day and the disk that came with my M8, which I hadn't tried to use previously, was corrupt and wouldn't install.

Download C1 from PhaseOne site and do use the key on the M8 CD.
