Don't know how many of you heard the announcement, but the aluminum MacBook has been upgraded to 'Pro' status and (woo hoo) now has an integrated SD card slot.

Apple - MacBook Pro - Technical specifications of the 13-inch.

Let's just say I'm excited. Anything that cuts down on having to carry small plastic card readers is a good thing.

Well, we get a little but lose a little. The 13 has gained the sd slot - cool. But the 15 inch has gotten the sd slot at the expense of the much more versatile and powerful express card slot .... and that is a real bummer.

That 13" is HOT!!! And, you can configure it with 8 gig of ram! Though I'm sure the aftermarket configuration will be much cheaper than the Apple $1K surcharge. But, only $150 for the 500GB upgrade on the hard drive.

That could be one sweet road warrior.

Regarding the Express slot... my current MB Pro has had an SD card reader stuck in their since the day I took delivery. LOL

More important, the FireWire port is finally back (bumped to 800 speed). The Target Disk Mode ability of FireWire has saved my data and time several times. Finally a decent successor to my beloved PowerBook 12".

Well, I'm in the market for a new Mac and I had my heart set on an entry level MacPro but the new MBP 13" (2.52) with the 256 SSD is really hard to ignore. The boot/access times may well be more robust! The SD slot is a nice perk although the newly reported WiFi card with a USB hub may well make the SD slot moot.

Regards,

I'm on my 14th Mac system (currently a black MacBook). The MacBook Pro 13" with 8GB RAM gets my seal of approval!

I had tons of issues with my black MacBook, though. I had to return it 5x within 2 years before receiving a replacement, which has been running fine for almost a year. Let's not get a new computer too hastily until about 8 months into the lifecycle of the product.

I have a question.

Who in the HELL thought those shiny screens would be a good idea?

I'm sorry, I don't get that.

If the response is: snazzy on-screen colour (et cetera).

My response is: "it doesn't mean poop until it's on paper."

Looks nice. I have a 13 in. macbook (non-pro) and have to say the glossy screen works fine. I've used it to transmit photos from bright locations like outdoors and the inside of a car with no problems. Color seems very accurate and the black and white images look great.

Well.. my first MacBook Pro had a glossy screen. My second MacBook Pro has a matte screen. My third MacBook Pro will have a glossy screen... BY CHOICE.

I found it better for editing on location...

SSD's are slowly dropping in price too, more good news. Like others I've missed the availability of the old 12" Powerbook and was hoping that Apple might introduce a replacement. This 13" Macbook Pro looks good though and, together with the Macbook Air, is probably as close as we're going to get unless and until the rumoured netbook/tablet materialises.

SSD is so cool. Got it in the Air and the speed and silence is a relief. Can't wait till the 250 and 500 GB and 1TB disks come down in eyelevel price range.

Mat,

The mention of a SD card slot on both the new MacBook Pro 13” and 15” models immediately caught my attention and piqued my curiosity as I followed along to the Apple WWDC Keynote yesterday.

However, I have found scant information regarding any specs or actually reasoning and supportive examples by Apple for its inclusion.

First, I would hope that the “standard SD card slot” is really a SDHC supported card slot, not just SD. However, the SD Association mandates that all SDHC products be denoted as such.

Second, I would be curious as to the read/write throughput.

Third, I would assume, that since this is being provided in place of the ExpressCard slot, it is being envisioned as a wide-ranging I/O solution beyond that of simply being a convenient built-in memory card reader. However, about the only SDIO devices I am aware of are those that provide WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, something that is already built-in to the MacBook Pros. Does Apple know about some yet to be announced breakthrough SDIO device?

The real story may be, not that new MacBook Pros include a SD card slot but, that the door has been opened for future Apple products to also incorporate such functionality as in a Apple iPad/media tablet/iPod Touch Deluxe and the possibilities that it would lend.

Anyway, we all know that Leica, sans S2, and now Apple, are both way off track in barking up the Secure Digital tree since true professionals only use CompactFlash ;-)

In the process of setting one up. The ports are close together on one side but addition of firewire 800 and displayport make this a gadget bag essential. I wonder how long before CF and those delicate pins will disappear from cameras. Apart from the display dongles there is little to misplace or catch on something. My 15" is starting to look bulky.

I loved my 12" Aluminum PowerBook, but the resolution was only 1024x768. I don't think it would be practical to use a 12" LCD for any resolution higher than that.

The next focus will be a bigger iTouch, I heard. A 10" iTouch. That would be awesome. It's like we're getting the Newton 2000 all over again.
