Max Alfy Posted June 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is difficult to be courteous! All of us, me included, use cabalistic member identification on this forum, which is legitimate. If however I wish to thank a member for his comments (Max, What a lousy capture!), I am often at a loss trying to find the appropriate first name. This can represent scanning hundreds of threads just to find one from another member in the confidence – or intimacy - of the original contributor. All that for trying to be polite! Is it too much to ask for everybody to sign, or at least register in the “About me” section – a valid first- or nickname? Thank you, Max
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Hi Max Alfy, Take a look here It is difficult to be courteous!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Marquinius Posted June 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2009 Max, I second that! I try to use first names as often as possible and even go so far that I check profiles and threads to find one. Marco
vertekijker Posted June 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 6, 2009 I agree, In the past I have also done 'research' to avoid putting in unpronouncable series of consonants when addressing someone in a reply. I just tried to put my first name in the 'about me' section, but I found no place to enter that information. Maybe a good idea to add such an entry place? I always sign off my postings with my first name anyway. Like now... ---------------- Frans
Max Alfy Posted June 6, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted June 6, 2009 Marco and Frans, how nice to be able to address you both personally. Let’s hope this catches to the whole forum! Max
NZDavid Posted June 7, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2009 Doggone it! At least we can see your smiling face. Pseudonyms used to be used for letter writing to papers; not longer. Use persists on the internet, but trends change. Cheers, David (really me)
stevelap Posted June 7, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 7, 2009 I seem to remember that not all that long ago the use of pseudonyms was frowned upon on the forum....but then something to do with German privacy laws forced a change, iirc? Nothing to stop individuals signing off with their real first name if they want to though.
andybarton Posted June 7, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is from the Forum Rules: "Authentification During the registration process you need to provide your full and correct name together with a valid email address; the member profile should be updated accordingly. These data provided will neither be published within the forum nor elsewhere nor passed on to other parties. They are required for the legal safeguard of the forum operator/licensee only. Current German legal jurisdiction assigns joint liability to forum operator/licensee in case of infringements. The operator/licensee therefore reserves the right to relate to a member's identity in such cases. If the identity of a forum member turns out to be unreproducible, his/her membership can be terminated temporarily or for unlimited time."
MPerson Posted June 7, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 7, 2009 Just put your name in the signature file which is attached to every post you make. You don't have to think about it.

alun Posted June 10, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 10, 2009 I agree -- a bit of courtesy and the use of proper names goes a long way in improving the overall atmosphere. I also agree with Andy (I think it was) -- the easiest thing is to pop your name (your real, actual name) in your sign-off signature file...and then you never have to think about it again... In any case, I have never understood this desire for user names, handles, acronyms, pseudonyms.

pmun Posted June 26, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 26, 2009 I can't see what difference it makes whether pseudonyms, actual names or nick names are displayed; as far as the internet is concerned a name is a name. It's not as though we're taking out bank loans or going for job interviews! As for convenience a pseudonym could be just as easy to remember as the person's real name or even easier. It should be entirely up to the individual how they would like to be referred to.

When I comment on a photo or item, I'm aware I'm getting closer than just a "hello". So I want to be polite and somehow a real name helps (for me). To be more precise, it is rather uncomfortable (again, my problem) talking to you and starting it all with "pmun". Yes, I can work around it all by not addressing at all. But then again, I'm a social animal and like to know who's saying things to me and to whom I'm saying things. But: in the end it's all up to every single forum member and I would never hold it against somebody for staying with a signature only.

When you address me, don't feel you have to call me pmun, the fact that you've already quoted me is fine. Besides, I think you are friendly and sociable for addressing my points anyway - that's enough for me. Perhaps, like a lot of people you treat emails or posts as if they were letters. I must agree with Marco. I will even look up names on the Internet if needed. Simply a case of good manners imo. For instance, talking to somebody in a pub would call for the use of a first name. Quite churlish to stick with "hey you"
