ShivaYash Posted June 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm a long term user of the famous 4th version 35f2 - the king of bokeh. What is the equivalent lens in the longer 50mm format? I have been given an old 50f2 to try, before I buy, its serial number is 2519366 - so far the photos look amazing, I love the bokeh, just want to make sure I'm getting the right lens. Thanks,
Advertisement Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Hi ShivaYash, Take a look here Best 50mm lens?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted June 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2009 As your thread topic header reads "Best 50mm Lens". That would be the current 50mm Summilux ASPH. There is no better 50mm lens made by Leica or any other Camera/Lens manufacturer. I have the Cron, Elmar and the Lux. The Lux see way more use then both of the others combined. ShivaYash Posted June 2, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted June 2, 2009 Thanks but by best, I don't necessarily mean sharpest. I want a lens for street portraits on the M8, I love the 35/2, pre-ASPH, in my eyes, this is the BEST 35mm lens made, my version dates from 1991 but I think the photos I take with it beat those taken on a current 35/2 ASPH. I want a sharp but warm, mellow feeling 50/2. I think I have already found it, the model I have now dates from 1972, but I need to take more portraits to be certain. Just want to know what other users think I should try before I commit to buying. Thanks,
Dan States Posted June 2, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 2, 2009 50mm lenses are like Pizza's. They are all good, but what you prefer may vary. If you like the look of your V4 35mm Summicron I'd suggest the current Summicron 50. It has a smooth, creamy tonal rendition and it's performance is near perfect at all apertures. Best wishes Dan

eckart Posted June 2, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2009 I think as well the current Summicron, this mean from 1979 to now should be the äquiv. to the IV 35 'Cron. But this is so subjective, if you find your lens in the type before, as you mentioned, nobody can say you are wrong, can they? Cheers, Eckart
4X5B&W Posted June 3, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Summilux pre-ASPH has many of the qualities of the Ver.4 35 Cron. Can be softish (at the edges) wide open, while sharp in the centre. Is sharp edge to edge when stopped down. Pleasant OOF rendition (not the same as "The King), but a very attractive look. Both are Mandler designs BTW.
Gentleman Villain Posted June 3, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 3, 2009 That means you have the right lens for you. The grass may seem greener at the other side of the fence, in reality itvrarely is.. you're right about that....Sounds like the OP is already doing pretty well and doesn't really need an upgrade or replacement. The only time to get serious about new equipment is when the old equipment is no longer inspiring to use...
Michael Hiles Posted June 3, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 3, 2009 I have been using the lens you are testing for almost all my Leica life (since about 1966). It is wonderful, it produces beautiful pictures. It is so good, I have no desire for anything else.
