hector_jorge Posted May 31, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last week I bought a Leica M3 Nª 1036104 with a Summilux 1:1,4/50 Nª 1758536, both in near mint condition. The camera seems to be unused for a long time, so the shutter in low speeds doesn`t work well and needs a service. The rangefinder image (the yellow rectangle) isn`t clear and needs a service too. I fell in love with the camera because its excellent condition with no scratches and the painted interior parts almost like new. The question is: the reparation work would be expensive? Many thanks for the advise. Hector.

dcoombs Posted May 31, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 31, 2009 If you're in love with it, then it's worth cleaning it up and making it operable. A good CLA would probably cost you some $300+. Don't know what services you have in BA, but if you can get it to the US, DAG or Sherry Krauter (Golden Touch) both have excellent reputations. I had Sherry renew an M3 I bought a few years ago, whose oils had all dried out from lack of use, and she returned to me a camera that felt and worked like a swiss watch. hector_jorge Posted June 1, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted June 1, 2009 Thanks, Doug for your answer. Here in Buenos Aires there are at least one very skill person that can repair my camera, an ex clerk from the Leica representant here, Lutz Ferrando, unfortunately out of business now. I will ask him tomorow if he can make the work and if he has all the replacement parts. If not, as I´m flying next month to Germany and I already have an appointment to visit Leica Factory in Solms, I will left my M3 there. Regards, Hector. lars_bergquist Posted June 1, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2009 It's a nice rig and well worth keeping in working order. That will also maintain its value and keep it working for the next half century. Yesterday I went to a veteran car meet here in Stockholm, with several classic Bentley, Bugatti and other sports cars from the 1920's. All in perfect running order. Your M3 is in the same class, but less bulky and expensive ... The old man from the Age of the Bugatti Royale
earleygallery Posted June 1, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 1, 2009 The shutter is an easy fix, standard CLA will sort that, but the dim rangefinder might be a more expensive fix, so get a quote first.

Doug Do you have any reference about Luton (England)?. I saw the Luton webpage where they say that the reparation work is about $750 at Solms and only a fraction of that amount in Luton. Can I trust in the quality of its work? They said too that Solms don`t repair the rangefinder, only change it for the M6 rangefinder, so the camera doesn`t remain exactly in its original condition.
