marknorton Posted May 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Another thread asked the question black or chrome M8.2 and LCT rightly pointed out the M8.2 is a painted finish instead of the chemically treated black chrome of the M8. We know the traditional M8 black chrome does not wear as well as the silver chrome. On mine there are some small nicks on the edges at the top of the body near the shutter releae andn I think it's likely to suffer from rubbing as the camera gets pulled in and out of bags - (or bumped against a second body as sometimes happens ). This is very subjective and everyone will comment based on their own experience which is greatly skewed by how they treat their camera... Within a general band of usage I would think the durability is the same... I would also say that the silver finish would hide ones sins a bit better... Regular use is another thing, and while I don't have a black one, the chrome does pick up dings and scratches like anything else. This is YOUR camera. For YOU to enjoy. Whether a dealer wants to give you £x less than he said he would if it were 'mint' is irrelevant. I have this with my watches. My wife just bought me a beautiful Panerai Luminor for my birthday using some money that she had saved in a little policy for a long time. I'm wearing the watch and enjoying it immensely - but it's getting scratched, used and bashed about. Should I stop enjoying it just to keep it 'mint' if I ever sell it? No - of course not - and this obsession with 'condition' only ever gets in the way. Don't get me wrong - I still have to work to get around it and not bother - I want to 'baby' all my cherished items - but you can't - otherwise all you do is look after it for the next guy to get the value you missed! In short - if you prefer the black M8.2 just get one and use it. Don't get the chrome version just in case it wears better if you don't enjoy the look. Do it for you - not the next guy! Both my M6, M8 and Minolta SRT 202 (from the 1970s) show signs of wear, on the edges, kind of gives them a bit of character, in my view. It is beginning to show brass on the on/off jagged edge under the M8 white symbol, where my finger grips on the 'step' and on the upper left corner of the rangefinder window. I don't have an M8.2 but I did have a black paint M7 and it held up fairly well (although nothing like my black chrome M6.) mustafasoleiman Posted July 11, 2009 Share #15 Posted July 11, 2009 I have all three and the silver chrome if the most durable, the black chrome is foggy at the corners, probably like the silver which hides it better thou. the black paint is already showing the gold edges after two weeks which i love anyway as i always did. the black paint is by far my favourite because of that, then the silver.
