erg Posted November 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking for a suitable SD card reader for my MBP. So far I like the 'Belkin Express Card' which can be inserted into the PC slot of my notebook, saving some space. Until I place my order, I would like to get some opinions and recommendations from the froum. Thank you.

jlancasterd Posted November 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 4, 2006 I've used a Kingston SD/MMC TravelLite card reader with Sandisk Extreme III 2GB cards on a PowerBook G4 (and a MAC G5 desk machine) for several months and am very pleased with it. It's the kind that plugs directly into a USB port without the need for a cable and ideal to take travelling if you want to back up images to your computer en route. I have a CF card adapter that plugs in via the PC slot on my MAC notebook, but it is incredibly slow compared to the FireWire reader I have. It's worth checking the specifications for the transfer speed before ordering. If I had known how slow the PC card adapter was, I would never have bought it. I do agree however that this slot is the most convenient way to take a reader, because the hardware is carried within the body of the laptop (and perminently left inserted) so you always have it with you

Guest stnami Posted November 4, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 4, 2006 USB ports are just as quick, make sure the cable is decent. the cheapies slow things down. I am happy yo use any brand My $20 dollar one is not that much slower than the firewire

ExpressCard/34 Secure Digital card readers are just coming to market and therefore are few and far in between. The test of any SD / SDHC media or host device is how well it adheres to industry standards set forth by the SD Card Association. Unfortunately many big name brands have failed in this area. This has been the main culprit behind reliability issues, incompatibilities, and consumer confusion. I would feel most comfortable with products whose manufacturers actually publish specification with references to industry standards compliance. Belkin, a company known for reputable products, currently makes no mention in this regard for their Multimedia Reader and Writer ExpressCard, F5U213. Additionally, this item is is currently hard to find in stock and, at this juncture, I would personally be looking at SDHC support anyway. One item that did turn up in my search was the Syncrotech EXP34-ADP-MUL5-01 ExpressCard 34 to Multiple Memory Card Adapter (EX-PRO34) which clearly states SD Card 2.0 support. Overgaard Posted November 4, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 4, 2006 I've started using this 8$ USB "pendriver" which takes SD cards and handle them really quick. Also nice to have when someone wants the pictures "on a stick" right away for approval or whatever. I got two of them - in partycolors - yellow and blue. Ugly but effective. stunsworth Posted November 4, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 4, 2006 If you buy a USB reader - which is much simpler than finding a firewire one - make sure it's a USB2 device, they are much faster than the original USB protocol. I have a Belkin USB2 CF reader that I use on by XP desktop system and my Macbook. Transfer times are similar for both.
philipotto Posted November 5, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 5, 2006 USB 1.1 is 12mbs, USB 2.0 is 480mbs firewire is 400mbs, firewire 800 is 800mbs Of course the speed of your card will limit the effective transfer rate. I use two 150X Transend cards that have a write speed of 22.5mbs. Currently I dont have a reader, I use the respective camera cable.
mike prevette Posted November 5, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 5, 2006 Also don't forget those are theoretical optimal speeds. It depends on the chipset and driver of the computer. I find that firewire is WAY faster than usb2 on macs. Possibly because they helped develop the protocol _mike

ceflynn Posted November 5, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 5, 2006 SanDisk makes a FireWire 400/800 card reader for CF cards, but appears not to have one for SD cards: SanDisk Extreme FireWire Reader.
