J_Thompson Posted May 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 15, 2009 Ahhh, thank you again Stuart, for another wonderful photographic glimpse into the past! I wonder what that pouch to the driver's right was for - spare goggles or a chamois for wiping them maybe? A little Googling found that the Wolcott Spl. was built by Frank Kurtis in 1952 and was driven to a 13th place finish. That year Kurtis built 21 out of the 33 cars in the Indy 500 field. Two more facts: Troy Ruttman won the race, at age 22, and is still the youngest driver to do so. 1952 Formula One champion, Alberto Ascari drove a specially prepared Ferrari, but crashed on the 40th lap due to a broken wire wheel. It would be the season's only F1 race that he didn't win. Too bad the Ferrari didn't have alloy wheels. Any more photos to share?
