stuny Posted May 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Indianapolis 500 race is held every year at the end of May on Memroial Day weekend. Macys ("The world's largest store") and Izod are doing a promotion, and they've placed a number of vintage Indy race cars in their windows at their 34th Street store. Here are some shot very early this morning..
Advertisement Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Hi stuny, Take a look here Indy & Macys & Izod?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
J_Thompson Posted May 14, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 14, 2009 Nice pictures, Stuart -- thanks for sharing. You can almost see the drivers, exiting those open cockpits, with faces covered with oil, tire rubber and grime. I'm glad they ended with roadsters from the mid-fifties. Macy's is also to be congratulated for those outstanding displays. Are there any more windows with this Indy theme?
pauledell Posted May 14, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 14, 2009 Stuart, Great images. Nice colors and sharpness. Framing is perfect. The cars of yesteryear (without the spoilers and newfangled technology) are far different than the ones today. Paul
stuny Posted May 14, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted May 14, 2009 John & Paul - Thank you. These are worlds away from the current cars, and even Jim clark's tiny Lotus, which was the first mid engine car to appear at Indy. He didn't win, but his performance was so strong that it wasn't long before the front engine roadsters were no more.
J_Thompson Posted May 14, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 14, 2009 Actually, Stuart, Sir Jack Brabham ran a Cooper in the 1961 Indy 500, predating Chapman and his Ford V8-powered Lotuses by two years. He finished ninth (due to tire troubles) but that was the begining of the end for the Offenhauser-powered roadsters. I remember listening to race announcer Sid Collins on the radio and eagerly cheering "Black Jack" on. If my memory is correct, Dan Gurney ran another rear engined car in 1962... the Harvey Aluminum Special.
stuny Posted May 15, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted May 15, 2009 John - Thank you for putting a band-aid on my faulty memory. Coverage of that race showed a mixture of astonishment that this tiny, strange foreign car could do so well and relief that the car did not place higher. That's called denial. Bob Jackson Posted May 19, 2009 Share #7 Posted May 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Saw my first Indy 500 when I was 6 yrs. old, 54 years ago. Some of these cars were racing at that time. Names like Bettenhausen, Vukovich, and others are called to my memory. Wonderful cars, wonderful photos.
