leicanewbie Posted July 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone converted any R lenses to ROM? Interested to know roughly the cost. Reason for asking is that I've seen some lenses from time-to-time on eBay that are priced more affordably because they lack this capability. But then knowing what to pay for them would require knowing what the upgrade cost would be. thanks in advance
Advertisement Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Hi leicanewbie, Take a look here Any info on converting lenses to ROM?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest maddin Posted July 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2006 I would glady give you the required info plus some advise yet i would rather like to know your real name first. it used to be a polite habbit here and at least i would like to continue it. if you do not like to be found by google use @ $ or other non-letter characters. cheers
leicapages Posted July 4, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 4, 2006 I have done this conversion once in the past, with a Summicron-R 50/2.0 after I had bought an R8 camera. The cost should be around 200 euro if I remember it correctly. Best way to proceed is to send the lens to Solms directly. It may also be cheaper because you cut out the middleman's surcharge. Guest user8952 Posted July 4, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 4, 2006 the costs are about 100 EUR per lens, but theactual advatage of ROM is limited. I would rather spend the money on something useful... (like film)
wizard Posted July 4, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 4, 2006 No, fux, it may have been 100 EUR in the past, but it is more now. I had a 3.4/180 Apo converted to ROM recently, and was charged 175 EUR. Andy
Guest maddin Posted July 4, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 4, 2006 ... plus 250 euro if cleaning seems necessary.

rick_dykstra Posted September 29, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 29, 2007 I thought I'd use this existing thread rather than start a new one. Question - is there a reliable list somewhere of which R lenses can be modified with ROM? Perhaps the list would be shorter if it was the ones that can't be modified. Any clues? Thanks, Rick. Rick There was an article in LFI 7/98 (when the ROMs first appeared) which also listed the lenses which could be ROMmed. I've got a Xerox kindly provided by an Old Forum member. A bit long to list them all - but if you tell me the lenses you're interested (with five digit order number) I can tell you yes or no.

rick_dykstra Posted October 2, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 2, 2007 Rick You type more quickly than I do!!! Ha! John, I'm not as quick as some. Bit off more than a mouthful to tell the truth. The formatting was hell. If anyone knows how to make the order numbers line up nicely on a tab, go ahead and fill yer boots! Send me a PM so I can make sure to admire your handywork. Regards, Rick. telyt Posted October 5, 2007 Share #14 Posted October 5, 2007 So no 90/2? Correct. No 90/2.
sdai Posted October 5, 2007 Share #15 Posted October 5, 2007 So no 90/2? It shouldn't be a big deal if you really love the lens, LCT ... I assume if Leica is offering backward compatibility generously, they surely will enable stop down metering. Worst case, you could either: 1. sell it 2. buy a Canon with a focus confirmation adapter for it.
lct Posted October 6, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 6, 2007 Sure i've got my 90/2 for quite a soft price and perhaps new roms will be available when the R10 is launched, wait and see.
gautier Posted October 6, 2007 Share #17 Posted October 6, 2007 This year, I paid 190 € 40 for an upgrade to ROM. I sent my lens directly to Solms.
msadat Posted October 6, 2007 Share #18 Posted October 6, 2007 what is the point of the upgrade?
masjah Posted October 6, 2007 Share #19 Posted October 6, 2007 what is the point of the upgrade? (1) Information to camera on the precise aperture dynamics and values of the individual lens example (every ROM is programmed individually per individual lens). Correct computation of aperture when passed through ROM exuipped 2X extender (2) Focal length information passed to camera for zooming flashguns (3) Lens information passed to camera to enable the DMR to correct vignetting for that particular lens. If one of these are important to you then there is indeed no point in the conversion.
leicanewbie Posted October 6, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted October 6, 2007 you're missing one : (4) increased resale value ( or value retention ) on eBay
