mhoersch Posted April 21, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have several R lenses with ROM, all of which show exposure time and aperture on the DMR's monitor as well as in the EXIF data of the DNG file. All lenses also show the focal length on the DMR monitor, but some don't show it in the EXIF data. Does anyone know what causes this different behaviour? Are there different versions of ROMs? Any information is greatly appreciated.
Advertisement Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hi mhoersch, Take a look here DMR and EXIF info about lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 21, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2009 Which lenses are we talking about? If forum members have the same they can check for you.
gdb Posted April 21, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 21, 2009 As far as I remember, DMR does not save focal distances of zoom lenses, even with ROM: only fixed focal distances are saved Gérard
christoph Posted April 21, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 21, 2009 As far as I remember, DMR does not save focal distances of zoom lenses, even with ROM: only fixed focal distances are saved Gérard Thats true, at least with my DMR and the 21-35, 4/35-70 and 4/80-200. Overgaard Posted April 21, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 21, 2009 Mi DMR does not recognize the 35-70/2.8. Some to think of it, maybe there's a difference in ROM reading with R8 and R9 because I think my R9 did, but my R8/DMR definitely doesn't. Only f-stop is there. Wolfgang Esslinger Posted April 22, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2009 Thats true, at least with my DMR and the 21-35, 4/35-70 and 4/80-200. Regards Christoph I can confirm this for my R9+DMR combination.
psquared Posted April 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) DMR does recognize zoom lenses and will save the info in the file but in a non-standard format. That's why the lens info can be seen when the picture is played back on DMR's LCD, but EXIF readers do not know which lens was used.
mhoersch Posted April 22, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted April 22, 2009 Thank you for all your answers! Currently, I have the 'problem' with the 21-35, 4/35-70, and 4/80-200 lenses. When I press the info button on the DMR, the focal length range of the lens is shown correctly, for example 35-70mm. In the EXIF data, however, only the value for max aperture is shown, f 4.0 that is, in this instance. I had the same effect with a used 4/280mm APO when I bought it. After a service trip to Solms the EXIF data showed max aperture f4.0 and focal length 280mm correctly. But I could never figure out what they did to the lens or the ROM... jaapv Posted April 22, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 22, 2009 At home I'll have a look at the Exif with ME Viewer.
robsteve Posted April 22, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 22, 2009 Manfred: Peter has it explained correctly. For zooms, the lens info is stored in a format that just the DMR can understand. As for your fixed focal length lenses, the ROM chip is a programmable device and probably lost its settings. When I had a 400mm f2.8 Rommed by Kindermann in Canada, they had to connect the chip to a PC and use a Leica supplied program to program the ROM chip to the lens.
