Such a cool car, but have yet to see one in real life.

Oh, I have seen a couple of them. Some parking, and one blasting by me on the Autobahn at what must have been more than 250 km/h (155 mph). Terrific car.

Lovely looking car - glad it's not diesel. A debate is now starting about whether diesels are better for the environment anyway if CO2 is not the problem it was thought to be. Diesels produce 100 times as much particulates as a petrol engines which is not good for asthma sufferers etc. I suppose it depends on the relative pricing. I don't know whether diesel is one of the cracking levels in petrol production.

8]Pete - Correct me if I am wrong but I think it has a direct injection petrol engine.

Yes I think the R8 is DI petrol; I had a short ride in a prototype some while back; it was full of telemetry gizmos. I think someone took the attached snap with their camera. It is a genuinely good-looking car, and you can't say that about many of today's offerings.

The diesel V12 may possibly be marketed as the R12, having heard the things which are winning at Le Mans (no ear defenders required) I think they will have to engineer in a "howl" but all insider reports suggest that this diesel motor is the absolute cat's pyjamas.

My contacts "just down the road" are strangely silent on whether they have tried the motor in any of their products and seem to be going the bio-fuel route, due to their US customer base.

Tony -

Most, but not all of the newest diesels use urea injection to counter the particulates, making them clean enought for the US designation of ultra low emissions (U-LEV). The urea reservoire needs replentishing about every 15,000 miles, if I recall. A few recent diesels accomplish this ultra low emission standard without the urea injection.

The V-10 petrol engine (a Lambo engine) has been released in the newest R8. The clue to it's being special is a larger opening in the blade.
