Digital Rangefinder vs Digital SLR

....I was wondering what our experienced forum considers the best everyday digital camera - rangefinder or SLR...

Want to know if a RF or a SLR is the best digital camera for everyday use?

Same for digital and film IMHO.

If what you do everyday is mainly macro and/or tele photos nothing's better than a DSLR.

Otherwise i prefer rangefinders personally but it is a matter of tastes obviously.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what our experienced forum considers the best everyday digital camera - rangefinder or SLR. Please try to ignore your investment in lenses (M or R) in answering the question! Thanks so kindly.

I'm afraid there's so such thing as a best camera, considered generally.

when the world has a decent EVF the differences will be quite narrow

no longer will the moving mirror contraption be required

and the sooner the better

a good EVF will have 'gain' for low light

will have as they do now, all the screen settings that you see on your LCD

and you can change modes between information filled and a taking screen

my LC-1 has a halfway decent EVF and I use it all the time

so when the good EVF arrives, will it be a D2b with interchangeable lenses ?

You really need to define "everyday" as it tells nothing of what you do with it.

For most of my "everyday" needs, the M8 should be the answer, because I can take it 'everywhere' with me and shoot most of what I want.

However, the absence of autofocus and the flexibility to use tele and zoom lenses means that I can't rely on it alone and need a DSLR. Unfortunately, the DSLR wouldn't get close to being an 'everyday' camera for me because of its bulk and weight. If I'm gong for a walk through a city, don't need the fastest focussing and focus tracking, it'll be the M8.

I don't anticipate the paint on my DSLR wearing thin, but that will happen with the Leica. :p

If everyday means you carry a lot and you demand the best lens quality 50mm or wider (I soot documentry photo 95% using 50mm/wider, and Ringfinder M 50/wider lens are better and smaller than SLR- especially the old 35mm 8 elemants direct design is so good when shooting slide). I will buy a M8 later.

Dlux3 is fine cause it has RAW setting, good resolution at A3 print and small body.

enjoy!

Differences between SLRs and RFs?

you are right, i didnt answer him, i was busy ranting :)

the SLR and dSLR both use a finder that is broadly a concoction of mirrors and prisms, with the object of 'seeing' exactly the frame that will be exposed, by looking through the lens

a rangefinder on the other hand uses a finder that is offset from the lens, and as a consequence suffers from 2 malladies.

* the paralax difference between the optical allignment of the finders view and the lenses view, hence it doesnt 'see' the same area through the whole field of vision, and cannot focus as you would an SLR by looking through the lens

* and it cannot cope as well with different lenses (where lenses can be exchanged) because the field of view also cannot be made to change for every lens choice the photographer may make, say between ultrawide 24mm and tele 200mm
