All M8 upgrades delayed by five weeks

To be fair, according to Pascal, they've had a bad batch from Copal. You can imagine that a box of (say) 1000 shutters arriving at Leica only to find every one faulty is not the best news if you're trying to get product and upgrades out the door.

The glass is out of stock as well, don't know who makes that, Schott?

A very polite lady from Leica Solms CS actually called me to tell me that I my slot had been moved. That is a pluss in all this as she didn't know I already knew. She offered no explanation other than the std "lack of parts" line.

Still it has, like others here, got me thinking how badly I want the upgrade. Weeks left to ponder the issue...

Lets face it: who could predict such huge demand for a very expensive service with prices for M8 and M8.2 falling! It's far from rational. Especialy considering all the rants on this and the other forum when the upgradeservice was first anounced.

So cancel the upgrades so we do not have to go through all the complaints about wasted money when the M9 is announced ;)

I decided not to get my M8 upgraded as I thought it was a rip off from the start. I also think, and I know this will not go down well with folk, that this should not have been offered by Leica in the first place, all they have done is create a rod for their own backs. Basically this upgrade programme is/was never thought thru properly.

If it makes anyone feel better about Leica service, I have been told I have to wait 6 weeks for Nikon parts to arrive at my repairers service dept before they can start my repair! Now, I have had to put my second Nikon in for service and been told the same story from the beginning.

After calls to to the 'top' Nikon people in Australia, I have had NO return courtesy calls. Seems Leica ain't bad all on their own.

Basically I think there is a misconception about the needs and wishes of the core Leica customer base with this poster....

Good news from Solms. I've just had a fax confirming my 2 cameras and 5 lenses are on their way back to me so the shutters and LCD glass are back in stock sooner than expected.

Just as the weather cleared up :) Good timing, Mark.

Or, not really trying to be negative, they are sending them back because of the longer then expected delay.

Hopefully they are done and adjusted correctly.

Just why didn't you send in the one camera you took apart. Is it now so different, after you tried to implement the delayed shutter rewind, that you thought Leica would take one look at it and say "No not this camera".

The third camera is not being modified and with a bill of more than €3000 for the two upgrades, two focus adjustments, a lens coding and rebuilding my MATE, I thought that's enough. The fifth lens, the 35mm Summilux was deemed to be within spec, focus shifting like a champ then...

It will be interesting to see what they've done with the camera which went back without a covering. I didn't think it reasonable to expect Leica to remove the Camera Leather kid leather cover I had put on and so did it myself.

The Camera Leather covering is much more difficult to remove cleanly than the Leica cover. The leather separates from the adhesive backing which remains resolutely stuck to the camera.

Leica is not being difficult with Cameraleather coverings, in fact they quite like them. In my case did they not only not charge for removing it, they even offered a freebie Vulcanite "as your camera had such nice leather, sorry we had to destroy it " I did not avail myself of the offer as I wanted to replace the leather myself.

That's funny because I requested they put on the newer M8 covering instead of the older style when I send my chrome M8 in for sensor replacement and they sent me a bill for $330. Which of course I declined.

That camera had the CL Griptac on it and now it has the CL Back Beauty leather on it.

They did put the old style covering back on it.

I went in today to confirm that my camera was in line, and it seems that something was not quite right with my reservation, but they offered a week 22 place, only to call back within minutes and push it to week 35. That is late August, for anyone who (like I) is calendar-week impaired.

Jaap... Considering you and your dogs provide Leica a steady stream of repair income I can see why they are so accommodating ;)

Carsten, did you book before the end of last year and get the old pricing? There we were thinking the 50% price increase on 1 January would choke off demand...
