michali Posted March 25, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) M8.2 & 135mm Apo-Telyt & Silver Efex Processing Thought I would try doing this one differently for a change. These guys are part of a coalition of 4 male lions, 3 brothers and their father. These are 2 of the brothers about 4 years old, nowhere near their prime yet and already magnificent looking lions. They had brought down a fully grown male giraffe. Thanks for viewing

imported_peter_m Posted March 25, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 25, 2009 I like it Mike, with the treatment of the photo I keep wondering how it would look engraved in silver or steel. Peter
stuny Posted March 25, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 25, 2009 Mike - Very impressive image (like out of a hunter's journal from the 1930s) and kill. As long as the giraffe was not drinking at the time it was a difficult task to take him down, all the more impressive when you consider the experience level of the lions. epand56 Posted March 26, 2009 Share #10 Posted March 26, 2009 It looks timeless with this treatment. Could be a picture of the times of Francis Macomber. Besides that, the lions are marvelous.
maurometallo Posted March 26, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 26, 2009 Majestic photograph, furtherly enhanced by the silvery treatment. The lions are... WOW ...!!!
michali Posted March 27, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted March 27, 2009 Gentlemen thank you very much as always for your comments, really appreciated. I'm pleased you liked the treatment. I was trying to take some of the goriness out of the scene. Mike - Very impressive image (like out of a hunter's journal from the 1930s) and kill. As long as the giraffe was not drinking at the time it was a difficult task to take him down, all the more impressive when you consider the experience level of the lions. Stuart- I saw it happen, not a pleasant experience for both the giraffe and me. No he wasn't drinking, which you're right is when giraffes are at their most vulnerable and lions at their most dangerous for the giraffe. I've been in the bush for 34 odd years and this bunch of lions are among the most impressive I've seen. I must say that I can't bear to watch kills or even photograph them anymore, as much as it's all part of the natural system. I normally move off and leave them to it, come back later. Must be getting soft with the onset of old age! Here's the original just for reference. Lighting was difficult with afternoon sun coming in from the left side of the picture. nealf Posted March 27, 2009 Share #13 Posted March 27, 2009 Great shot of a rare kill, I once watched three male lions take a giraffe in the Samburu region of Kenya, too far away for a photo. They were known as giraffe hunters and had developed the technique to be successful at it.
JLV Posted March 27, 2009 Share #14 Posted March 27, 2009 Strong and impressive picture. Beautifully PP. Comes out from the 30's. Thanks for sharing with us these moments and your experience. All the best Jean-Luc
michali Posted March 28, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted March 28, 2009 Great shot of a rare kill, I once watched three male lions take a giraffe in the Samburu region of Kenya, too far away for a photo. They were known as giraffe hunters and had developed the technique to be successful at it. Nealf- Thank you. You're right, some of these guys become specialists at hunting particular prey. I operated in the Kwando area of Botswana for a number of years and we had 2 prides of lions in the area, one of which specialised in hippo and buffalo and another which specialised in elephants! JLV- Thank you for your comments, appreciated.
