Advertisement Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Hi Stan Raucher, Take a look here M8 Diary on Digital Outback with DNG file. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
PaulN Posted October 28, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2006 Anyone check out that DNG file? In particular check out the presumably blown out highlights on the car; magenta everywhere.
scott kirkpatrick Posted October 28, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 28, 2006 Anyone check out that DNG file? In particular check out the presumably blown out highlights on the car; magenta everywhere. Yes, I did. He exposed for the restaurant, and placed the plaster in the highlights. I doubt that he cared about the few sun glints on the two parked cars, but they look to be many stops above the interesting stuff in the image. I don't see what inference you could draw from the magenta edge to a spot of sunlight reflected off painted and chromed metal. scott
mike prevette Posted October 28, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 28, 2006 Exposure looks good to me, the highlights aren't any more blown out than they would be on film. One thing that is becoming clear from these M8 DNG's is at least at the low ISO's they don't benefit from noise reduction or sharpening of any kind. The files without any correction whatsoever seem to look very natural, at least in photoshop's RAW converter. By 'natural' i mean they look like they will print very smoothly. One thing that usually destroys digital prints to me is the constant oversharpening that looks good on screen, but comes out crap on paper. my 2 cents any way. _mike
Dan States Posted October 28, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2006 How does a jackass who never used a rangefinder camera end up with a test M8 and I'm still pulling my taffy on a "pathetic" old M6? It seems Leica was so interested in generating pre-production press they are willing to hand M8 cameras to any boob with a website.
billh Posted October 29, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2006 The RAW file looks fine, but I also downloaded the 400D RAW file, and it was comparatively terrible. Unfortunately, while the link to the %d and 1Ds2 RAW files exist, the actual files do not seem to be there any longer.
abrewer Posted October 29, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 29, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Agree with Bill. The RAW file looks great to me, too. It's also impressive how much detail there is to examine in the image. The "Honda" emblem on the hubcap is incredibly sharp at full image size even on my cheap-o Dell laptop here at home. Thanks. Graham, I downloaded the entire file from "YouSendIt", but cannot open in PhotoShop CS2. Get "program error" message. Is there some trick to opening DNG files in CS2? plinden Posted October 29, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 29, 2006 I'm concerned with the chromatic aberration/fringing I see on the edge of the building on the right and the rendering of the bare branches of the tree on the right (bare branches against red background are red colored). Peter: Any CA is more a function of the lens than the sensor in the camera. And what little CA I see in the image won't be seen on a print. I've seen worse fringing with my 1DS and L lenses. Adobe.com - New downloads John, I've just downloaded regular CS2 & Bridge updates, then ACR 3.5 and ACR 3.6 Beta; then re-booted computer (running Windows XP). No longer get "system error" prompt, but now get "cannot open because of wrong file type" prompt.
truando Posted October 29, 2006 Share #17 Posted October 29, 2006 John, (running Windows XP). No longer get "system error" prompt, but now get "cannot open because of wrong file type" prompt. Get a Mac! Iopened the file just fine in CS.
stunsworth Posted October 29, 2006 Share #18 Posted October 29, 2006 Hi Malcolm, no need to spend hundreds of pounds/dollars buying a Mac to open the file. You may have put the plugin in the wrong directory. The RAW file opens fine on both my Macbook and XP system. I'd forget about the ACR beta. I think it expires at the end of the year anyway. The latest version of 'standard' ACR will be ok.

No longer get "system error" prompt, but now get "cannot open because of wrong file type" prompt. Look at the file extension. It may say .dng.txt If so, go into the file name and knock off the .txt so the program will recognize it. JC
