jimbo035 Posted March 23, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2009 What's wrong with the AWB and auto-focus anyway ? Haven't seen a thread complaining about either of them. Moreover I'm happy with a 4GB SD card... and if I decide to upgrade the firmware, I'll have to buy an unwanted 8GB card. The only "up-side" is that I had the foresight to buy a Card Reader/Writer for the Panasonic FX150 that was soon replaced by a D-Lux 4. Up to today I assumed that Leica got the firmware right before putting the camera on the market. Tut tut :-).

Updates to firmware for any type of computer system (including digital cameras) are fairly common. Doesn't mean it didn't work out of the gate, just means they've been able to make improvements with a few months of real world usage and customer feedback. As to the need for a new SD card --- why would upgrading the firmware require you to buy a new card? I guess I don't follow this... Jeff.
farnz Posted March 23, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 23, 2009 Jim, I agree with Jeff: the installation instructions don't mention needing to use an 8GB card. "STEP 4. Copy the firmware file DLX4_120.BIN from the desktop/finder onto an SD Memory Card in its top level folder." Pete.
jimbo035 Posted March 23, 2009 Share #7 Posted March 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) "As to the need for a new SD card --- why would upgrading the firmware require you to buy a new card? I guess I don't follow this..." Because under "Preparation of the memory Card" the Installation Instruction for the firmware update states that "a minimum of 8MB available memory is necessary" Perhaps I am unique in that I find that the highest capacity memory card I have (4GB), for the one camera I have that uses SD/SDHC cards, is more than adequate. I suppose that if I choose not update now, I shall be unable to avail myself of v 1.3 et seq. I will refrain from further comment regarding purchasers of a £500 pound camera having to go back to the maker suggesting improvements, however trivial they might be .... jimbo035 Posted March 23, 2009 Share #10 Posted March 23, 2009 OMG so it is Must I obey this edict to be able to take the subsequent firmware updates on board ?. It may be much later that one comes along enabling us to pre-set or select a particular focal length - the only one can think of that would really interest me. farnz Posted March 23, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2009 Pete go back to Step 3 of the Instructions Oops, Jim, I hadn't made it that far down the file. But as Aegean points out you only need to have 8 MB of your SD card free. Pete. (Cross-posting. Doh!)
LoSenior Posted March 23, 2009 Share #12 Posted March 23, 2009 Thanks, I just completed the update and it went very well. I've had my D-Lux 4 for a few days and I'm having a great time. The DSLR is in the bag for a bit of time.
USA road racer Posted March 23, 2009 Share #13 Posted March 23, 2009 I just took several photos AFTER updating to 1.2 !! Nice job, Leica!! The AWB works much better in my opinion. Auto focus is much faster as well. Now, if they had lost the" X" magnification and given us the focal length in MM, I'd be a real happy camper! ceflynn Posted March 23, 2009 Share #14 Posted March 23, 2009 The instructions call for a card reader to transfer the firmware update file from the computer to the SD card. I wonder who will be the first to try copying directly from the computer to the SD card mounted on the desktop via the camera, and to tell us whether that works as well. jimbo035 Posted March 24, 2009 Share #19 Posted March 24, 2009 I don't have a card reader or a computer that reads cards, so I hope someone does answer your question quickly! Maybe someone will confirm that you will need a combined card reader/writer, as the firmware has - according to the Installation Instructions - to be written to a formatted card. I use Sandisk cards and, as may be expected, the same company makes card readers, and reader/writers. You might as well buy one, as I suspect further firmware updates/grades will follow. miami91 Posted March 24, 2009 Share #20 Posted March 24, 2009 Even Leica, in common with less expensive Brands, find it necessary to improve their cameras by this method Jim, You seem very disturbed by the concept of firmware updates. If it's any consolation, this is not merely the province of "less expensive" cameras. Cameras costing many times the price of the D-Lux 4, including the top-of-the-line digital models from Leica (M8, DMR), Nikon (D3), and Canon (1DsMkIII), have all had multiple firmware updates since release. These are mini-computers after all, so periodic refreshes of their "operating systems" are normal and typically to the advantage of us users. Best wishes, Jeff.
