lct Posted March 19, 2009 Share #21 Posted March 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...What I found astonishing comparing results of both lenses were the differences in colour rendition: the pre-asph maintained a much more blueish - almost cold - character whilst the asph shows a tendency to earthy warmth.... Not my experience i must say. I don't find sinificative differences in color rendition between the latest pre-asph and the asph 50 personally. Which version of the pre-asph 50 do you refer to if i may ask?

UliWer Posted March 19, 2009 Share #24 Posted March 19, 2009 Mine as well so we must agree to differ so far i'm afraid. I did some comparaisons a couple of years ago but i've lost the pictures unfortunately. Thanks for your reply. I'd like to compare both under same conditions and show some examples if they are significant or tell that i was wrong if they are not. Perhaps on weekend we will have some better light than on the last ones.
adan Posted March 19, 2009 Share #25 Posted March 19, 2009 UliWer: I fully agree that the modern lenses are warmer - athough I class it more on a magenta/red vs. green/cyan scale. In his little .pdf pamphlet on "M lenses: Their Soul and Secrets" (still available on the Leica web site) Erwin Puts has a chart detailing the color balances for selected Leica lenses. The ideal ISO color balance, that Leica aims for today, is red 0/green 5/Blue 4. Many of the older lenses balance higher in green or lower in blue (or both) than today's "ideal". I've marked these - and coincidentally they are the ones whose color I prefer. They tend to cyan skies and clouds, and earthy brown skin tones - the newer lenses tend towards blue/purple skies and pink skin tones. Welcome, dear visitor! JeffWright Posted March 20, 2009 Share #26 Posted March 20, 2009 Interesting, Andy. I don't know where it comes from but the last time i tried a current Summicron, i had the feeling that its OoF rendition was harsher than that of my 11819 In medicine we call that the placebo effect
antistatic Posted March 20, 2009 Share #27 Posted March 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like my 50 lux asph. It helps make my pictures look pretty. How's that for scientific analysis?
wizard Posted March 20, 2009 Share #28 Posted March 20, 2009 It would be interesting to know if anybody shares my observation about colour rendition of both lenses. I use both lenses on slide film (Fuji Provia 100F mostly), and have so far not detected any noticeable difference in color rendition. My Summilux pre-asph. is certainly not blueish. Other lenses fall into that category, such as the version IV Summicron 35, which I have to always use with a Skylight filter to match its color rendition to the other lenses. What I have noted, however, is that the color rendition of the Summilux 50 asph. is somewhat fresher, or more lively if you want than that of the pre-asph.
