razerx Posted February 27, 2009 Share #41 Posted February 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am just day dreaming here so forgive me. If Fujifilm can take the Nikon D200 body, put in its own sensor and make a superior S5 body then why not Leica take the D700 or better yet D3x body, give it an R mount and charge 2x more for the badge? If you will do that Mr. Leica then I promise you I will buy it and then spend at least another $20k USD on lenses.
Advertisement Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Hi razerx, Take a look here The disappearing R. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mooky Posted February 27, 2009 Share #42 Posted February 27, 2009 Sounds like a nightmare to me. The day Leica does that, is the day I would seriously consider not using Leica any longer. For myself (and dare I say others) using a another brands body just isn't shooting with a Leica and is not part of the whole experience. (please, no leica/minolta comments) It's fine if that's what you want to do but it's just not the same......
sdai Posted February 27, 2009 Share #43 Posted February 27, 2009 Peace ... this would never happen. Why would ANY other camera company give Leica their hi-end body? now coupled with Leica's lenses, how can other companies sell ANYTHING in the future? LOL I'm only speaking on my own behalf of course, but the reason why I choose Leica is certainly NOT because of its cameras. This is especially true when they don't even build their sensors and processors. M users may not agree with me on this one, but heck, although I own several Ms too but I love SLRs much better. All they need to do is putting stuff together and make them work RELIABLY, if I want a Nikon, then I'll buy a Nikon, if I want a Canon, then I'll buy a Canon. Don't waste time on that. But Simon, you can have a Nikon or a Canon body these days and use it with Zeiss lenses. Why not Leica ones with full aperture metering? What? What do you say? Because we would not buy Leica bodies any more? Oh! Simon, how can you say terrible things like that?
sdai Posted February 27, 2009 Share #45 Posted February 27, 2009 Of course you can mount the Cosina Zeiss lenses on to any Nikon, Canon, or a A900, and a Pentax ... but that's not what I am saying. What would interest me in a futuristic R10 is mainly the CCD sensor it might adopt from Kodak and the European approach to camera handling and signal processing, crude but close to its root - not as rounded/refined as the Japanese ones. I had enough of the Japanese cameras - not saying they're bad, far from it. I want something different, something BASIC but USABLE and RELIABLE from Leica, and that's it. Well, to be fair, despite your disclaimer, all Leica R cameras from R3 up to and including R7 were basically Minolta cameras, so I really don't see the difference here. And what is so wrong with platform-sharing? If it gives Leica the opportunity to build an R camera with Leica character and philosophy - like those Minolta-R-s, I couldn't care less if the basic parts were originally Japanese, Chinese or whatever. mooky Posted February 27, 2009 Share #47 Posted February 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Platform sharing has it's place as in something like the 4/3rds system. To me, tradition is an important part of (maybe a luxury) to the whole idea of company specific brand bodies and optics. The R bodies were all to Leicas spec's and while I use them and found them reliable, they were not the same 'identity' as the SL family - these ideas have been spoken of before. A companies brand has it's strength in what it produces, both in lenses and bodies. It can be fairly assumed that the R line suffered over time partly because of the R bodies - even though they had some excellent features - Leica had the M line which spoke of tradition and continuity through to this day. Whenever I see a Contax camera I think Zeiss lenses made in various countries on bodies that while capable, just seem to lack the brand image of a single solitary 'in house' camera company. The R line will live on - my concern now is whether my non ROM lenses will work on the R10 - and I have a sneaking suspicion they won't - I would be disappointed.
