MarkP Posted September 18, 2014 Share #14421 Posted September 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) But Lithuania isn't Balkan - too far North. Quite rusticated gravestones. Romania or Serbia?

MarkP Posted September 18, 2014 Share #14423 Posted September 18, 2014 I just Googled European Jewish cemeteries and unusual gravestones -- up came the Jewish cemetery in Sarajevo. Very unusual indeed. I imagine these would also be much harder to destroy than the usual fare of gravestones eleswhere!
dem331 Posted September 18, 2014 Share #14424 Posted September 18, 2014 But I think the Serbians had a good try. I imagine the lphoto was taken before the war. I visited it in the early 90s. Rgds, Enrique
vertekijker Posted September 18, 2014 Share #14425 Posted September 18, 2014 Dear Enrique and Mark, It is Sarajevo indeed. The second largest Jewish cemetery in Europe, and Sephardic. The tombstones are unique in the world, can't be seen anywhere else. Practically all the graves are from Jews who died before the holocaust. World War II reduced the large Jewish population to a very small minority. I took the picture last spring. During the war in former Yugoslavia, the cemetery was used by Serbian troops to shell the Bosnians in the city. The Bosnians fired back. This resulted obviously in a lot of damage to the graves - bullet holes everywhere, tombstones broken, some graves lying empty... Before the Serbs left, they boobytrapped the area and put land mines in, which made matters worse. For many years it was too dangerous to enter the place. The cemetery has been cleared now, but I was still a bit anxious walking around because not all the paths are visible and you end up having to walk through tall grass, bushes and rubble. The place is terribly neglected. Trees and shrubs grow wild, and people dump their garbage - old tires, plastic bottles, etc. - and dog excrement everywhere because of the gangs of hungry wild dogs that make this their territory. The scariest thing about the place are actually these roaming packs of wild dogs that we had been warned about. At some point my son and I had to run as they came after us - my son had bought candy (lokhum) in the bazar, which they must have smelled. What a sad place, we never saw another visitor. It left a deep impression on us. With the help of my Monochrom I was able to put together a collection of photos that capture the atmosphere. dem331 Posted September 19, 2014 Share #14434 Posted September 19, 2014 Kerela is close .... Somewhat north of there Otto you are absolutely right, Indonesia was colonised by the Dutch, but I believe the Portuguese were there first, although for a short time. Michael Geschlecht Posted September 20, 2014 Share #14438 Posted September 20, 2014 Hello Dem331, Nice photos of Goa. What are those things that look like shrimp that are lying on the beach in your first photo? Best Regards, Michael
dem331 Posted September 20, 2014 Share #14439 Posted September 20, 2014 Thanks Michael. They are indeed prawns left to dry on the beach after been fished. They use them to make curry. I believe this a way of having supplies of prawns when the weather is not good for fishing. Rgds, Enrique
