Guest suilvenman Posted May 17, 2010 Share #4361 Posted May 17, 2010 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I guess, I missed it, or do you refer to Olympus as your hint ... so an English speaking island somehow close to Greece ? Cyprus, Malta ?? Apologies, esquire53, there was no hint intended. Olympus refers to camera make only. The island is nowhere near Greece. Ken. Guest suilvenman Posted May 17, 2010 Share #4365 Posted May 17, 2010 George - we're looking for an island. Frans - Madagascar would be too big. Esquire53 - Canada is too far north. Hint: Esquire53 and Jan suggested, quite correctly, that the windows have a British connection. Anything else about the windows? Cheers, Ken.

vertekijker Posted May 17, 2010 Share #4370 Posted May 17, 2010 I guess I should add that Napoleon lived in this residence on St. Helena from 1816 to 1821. Longwood House. ------------------- Frans
Guest suilvenman Posted May 17, 2010 Share #4371 Posted May 17, 2010 (edited) Saint Helena?------------- Frans Excellent, Frans, that's it. (As a final-year medical student, my son chose to do a study based on the island's population. I did offer to let him take my SL (he's an excellent photographer - unlike his old man) but for reasons of weight and size, he wisely took the OM1. St. Helena is not the easiest of islands to get access to - his trip involved an RAF flight to Ascension Island and then a small ship to the island.) The building is, as you say, Frans, Longwood House where Napoleon was offered the chance by the British to become a long-stay guest - an offer he couldn't refuse. (I should say thanks to moderators and fellow thread contributors for accepting the non-Leica involvement here.) Over to you, Frans. vertekijker Posted May 17, 2010 Share #4372 Posted May 17, 2010 Quite an opportunity you had to visit the island, Suilvenman! Lucky you! Once I knew that you were looking for an island with an English connection, I checked lists of Commonwealth islands and eliminated the ones - on the basis of your picture - that were too tropical or too cold in appearance. Didn't take me long to find it that way with the help of Google images. Ok, I'll have to dig something up. I'll post my picture tomorrow. -------------- Frans

vertekijker Posted May 19, 2010 Share #4380 Posted May 19, 2010 Dear Michael and Stefan, it is Grasse indeed, the famous city of perfume in the South of France. Stefan, I'm puzzled that you only needed that statue to know it was Fragonard and then didn't add the name of the city... You both deserve credit, but Michael made good use of the assist. Your turn Michael. ---------------- Frans Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
