earleygallery Posted February 13, 2007 Share #41 Â Posted February 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Assuming the OP is an amateur and has no constraints on the formats/media he chooses then I would ask "why do you need to go digital?". Â If you like the results you're getting and you don't need the immediacy of digital capture then really, is there any point? Digital offers significant benefits over film in some situations yes, but unless those are benefits to you then they are irrelevant. Â I would also tend to agree that traditional B&W images are still preferable to digitally produced B&W images. If B&W is your bag then that's a very good reason to stick with film IMO. Yes there is equipment, materials and processes out there that are approaching traditional B&W but it still doesn't have quite the same qualities. Â OK, the cost element. But factor in the cost of the camera (M8?) extra lenses (wide angle) and other associated costs (computer drives for storeage, maybe upgraded computer, softward, printer, inks, papers etc.) is cost really an issue? I don't know for you, James, but what i like over all personally is doing my own photography. I mean not only shooting but also developing, retouching and printing the exact way i want. Can't do this with film so good bye film sorry...
dspeltz Posted February 13, 2007 Share #43 Â Posted February 13, 2007 Reading your message suggests you need to go slow. Here is a way to do it. Go to the B&H website, or other if you wish, and buy a body only XT Rebel for $450. then get the $75 Canon 50mm lens. Now you have less than $600 invested in a wonderful camera for the money (there is the new XTi but it costs more and is 10 megapixel rather than 8, no real difference). Â Play with it. If you really like it, move up. But the Rebel and 50mm lens is inexpensive (while you can get them), weighs no more than a Leica M8 with lens, and takes wonderful pictures. I cant think of a better way to try the medium.
