stunsworth Posted January 18, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 18, 2009 That's what passes for a review these days? I guess in his case you get what you pay for.
luigi bertolotti Posted January 18, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 18, 2009 That's what passes for a review these days? I guess in his case you get what you pay for. At least... it's free... I wonder why he defines M8 as "half frame"... btw, I don't think it is "the smallest M lens Leica has ever done" , though it's undoubtly very compact. But... the author has indeed a delicious baby... JBA Posted January 18, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2009 Whatever you do, don't use one of those "ridiculous" external finders. You might look through the wrong hole!
delander † Posted January 18, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 18, 2009 In this digital age, with its pixel peeping capability, many photographers using DSLRs of all sorts with zooms and primes are obsessed with sharpness. In this 'review' the reviewer stresses the optical capabilities of the lens, including sharpness, linearity, vignetting etc. In this way I think the review enhances Leica's reputation among those that have heard about it but cant or dont want to believe it. He even refers to 'crazy Germans' inferring that the the lens is better than it needs to be. So overall good for Leica even though he makes his little digs here and there. marknorton Posted January 18, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ken likes to criticise the Nikon cropped format because the area of a DX sensor is 44% of the FX sensor. However, with the Leica sensor, he's wrong to speak of half-frame. The M8 sensor has an area of 56% of the M9 sensor (he said, hoping).
Photon42 Posted January 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 18, 2009 Ken likes to criticise the Nikon cropped format because the area of a DX sensor is 44% of the FX sensor. However, with the Leica sensor, he's wrong to speak of half-frame. The M8 sensor has an area of 56% of the M9 sensor (he said, hoping). So he's finally found out about the digital Leica. In his "Cartier-Bresson and the Leica" article, it still reads "Leica may be expensive, but it's a bargain compared to digital. " Had to laugh about his interpretation, why HCB was fond of the "one camera - one lens" concept, though (same article). Cheers Ivo
Neil Macmillan Posted January 18, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 18, 2009 Here's a review with a little more substance to it: Lens Test: Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 - - PopPhotoFebruary 2007 I've had my own M8 outfit for almost a year. My main lens is in fact the 28mm 2.8 Asph (there it is in my avatar); my only other lens is the 90mm Macro-Elmar. I am thinking of adding a 50: new, old, 'lux, 'cron, elmar, summarit: no decision yet.
