M7 Repair

My M7 came back to me on Friday from Solms after 50 days. The automatic frame counter was stucked; I've put a film inside today and on the second frame everything's blocked: shutter release button, wind lever. I have to start a photographic work on Tuesday, I've already written to Leica. I'm very upset about this . I choose Leica and M system for the reliability they have. What I have to do now?

I'm sorry to hear of the malfunction. As a last effort, please try the following:

1) Remove all film using the normal procedure.

2) Attempt a wind once the film is out and the bottom is off.

3) Set the shutter to 1/60 or 1/125, the mechanical speeds. Try to fire the shutter at those speeds.

If any of the above works, try a set of brand new batteries and see if things clear up.

Once you get the bugs sorted out, the M7 is a very likeable machine. I had to send mine back twice for DX reader problems. Their post-repair checkout procedure for this model leaves something to be desired.

That´s too bad, I´am feeling sorry for you !

Hope you have a backup- camera somewhere. All hints I also would have followed

have been given above. There is nothing more to do but sending it in again.

Before packing, give the thing some (small) slaps to show your anger. Perhaps some curtains are tangled ...

sorry to hear about this...exactly the same thing happened to a friend of mind when he started his vacation in Lapland:(

Also here his only option was to send it in to be fixed, I do not know what the failure was but the symptoms were as you describe.

It must be extremely frustrating...good luck anyway.

Annibale --

No consolation, I know, but I had severe problems with my M7 -- all related to the malfunctioning DX reader, but also an undiscovered circuit board fault. While in my case it didn't result in a shutter lock-up, I suspect that a malfunctioning circuit board could cause this...possibly, and that replacement of the faulty circuitry will fix it.

But I'm afraid none of this means that you'll get a fast or 'special' turnaround from Leica servicing -- I was in the same situation and it prompted me to buy a back-up M6TTL, which I have never regretted.

My M7, btw, after having both the DX and circuit board problem fixed (and the finder upgraded free of charge) has performed flawlessly.

There doesn't seem to be any real alternative other than a back-up body, however....
