jaapv Posted January 7, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) On another forum there is a poster claiming to have measured the M8 shutter lag at 80 Msec. That seems to me to be too long by far. Has anybody got the real figure?
Advertisement Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Shutter lag?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
SJP Posted January 7, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 7, 2009 See in the digital forum: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/5316-m8-shutter-lag-delay.html#post769398 Apparently it is mentioned in an M8 brochure. I agree with you that 80ms seems too high. From my experience the shutter lag is close to zero.
luigi bertolotti Posted January 7, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 7, 2009 They declared 0.08 s in their brochures: personally, I think that (apart the tech capabilty to have a real measure) is not an indecent value... being shorter than a typical human "reaction time" (see the response times of athletes at 100 mtr. start) I think it's someway logical that, in practical use, one doesn't even notice it. BTW... been this thread started by Jaap... ... you can probably appreciate a very good reaction time when one feels abruptly the terrible pain of a tooth nerve when it's touched... jaapv Posted January 7, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted January 7, 2009 That is a funny test- it tests the photographer as much as the camera. Using the new shutter, discarding the extremes, over 20 shots it gives me an average of 0.05 seconds.
LeonardT Posted January 7, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 7, 2009 I consistently get .05 seconds as well, with the original M8 shutter. Funny thing, doing the test without a camera I get .1 seconds. I guess I have a slow mouse. Len

Funny... but imho funny and no more... given the fractions of time involved, I think that there is too much uncertainess basing the test on the action of "fire when arrow crosses 0"... But if I remember well there is the way to actuate M8 shutter via USB with the Leica-provided Software (I didn't install it... not even remember the name...) : probably a decent DIY test with a PC could be set up this way... Shootist Posted January 7, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 7, 2009 With my chrome M8 and my mouse at the office I get a consistent .08+/-. So since I get the same time clicking a mouse button as I do with the camera I'd say that is my reaction time and the camera shutter lag time is virtually non existent. Guest Luis D Posted January 7, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 7, 2009 I agree. Whilst I do not have time to waste to sit and try to measure exactly, my feeling it exposes as quick as I put my finger down, which means no lag. Maybe the guy who says it is long was counting wakeup from sleep (the M8, not himself ).

Well, .08 sec. is 80 milliseconds. On the other hand, I don't really care as I have never missed a shot with my M8, and it certainly is no slower than my M6TTL, or at least I cannot tell the difference. It is also no slower than my R8/DMR, most likely it is far faster. Who really cares? Go out and take pictures. Cheers, Gene
garygsandhu Posted January 8, 2009 Share #11 Posted January 8, 2009 Actually Jaap, I didn't claim to have measured the shutter lag. I found that figure in the leica literature. I did compare it to other cameras with known shutter lags and the 80ms figure seems to be right.
