Boxer 53 Posted January 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm thinking of buying a very nice M series lens which is not coded for M8 use. Does anyone know what the approximate cost of getting a lens coded would be? Can Leica in NJ do this or must it go back to Germany? Any help would be appreciated. Advertisement Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Hi Boxer 53, Take a look here Lens Coding. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 6, 2009 Which focal length? 50 mm and longer will not need to be coded, 35 mm is debatable, 28 and shorter must be coded.
Double Negative Posted January 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 6, 2009 What Jaap said... If you just want to try it out, you can either DIY at home with a Sharpie or pick up a $70 Mcoder kit. If you have Zeiss lenses (as I do) then John Milich is your man. He machines new flanges with the proper bit buckets for coding.

And after that, just mill the black marks to indentations with a Dremel tool and fill with black paint...
sean_reid Posted January 6, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 6, 2009 And after that, just mill the black marks to indentations with a Dremel tool and fill with black paint... Jaap, We don't all quite have the skill to do that job well at home or in the office. <G> You're used to doing precise drilling. Cheers, Sean
jaapv Posted January 6, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 6, 2009 Well, yes, Sean, but then any friendly Dental lab or precision workshop will do it for you, probably at no or minimal charge, which cannot be said for Leica.
Printmaker Posted January 6, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just had my Zeiss 21/2.8 coded by DAG. Nice job. $75. dagcam@chorus.net Tom Kauai's Printmaker

Hi Jaap, Here we encounter international differences. <G> Dental labs don't do anything for free here. John Milich *is* my precision workshop! Does anyone know what the approximate cost of getting a lens coded would be? Can Leica in NJ do this or must it go back to Germany? Any help would be appreciated. Max Bowers $175/lens to do it in New Jersey. I just sent three lenses in yesterday. I was told that the turn around time is approximately six weeks. norm_snyder Posted January 7, 2009 Share #11 Posted January 7, 2009 Have a V.4 35mm Summicron that just arrived at DAG for CLA and coding. Looking forward to not having to renew the sharpie marks.
intex Posted January 7, 2009 Share #12 Posted January 7, 2009 What is Leica now charging for coding?
charlesphoto99 Posted January 8, 2009 Share #13 Posted January 8, 2009 I have two lenses in at DAG (35 lux asoh and 24) for coding (and focus adjust on 35). $75 each for the coding though I believe it takes a while as he sends the bayonets back to John Milich for coding. Screw Leica I say (last coding they did for me - after eight weeks waiting - I got my 28 back with a 24 bayonet). Hmmm, maybe all dentists in Holland are all Leica enthusiasts but not here. I know mine would look at me like I was crazy if I asked her that. Though my periodontist's hygienist has a Nikon D3. I was bummed when she told me as I was spending big bucks with them and couldn't afford a D3 myself (a camera I really needed as a pro - she was using hers to shoot her kids soccer games). Now that I have one I feel better.
