biglouis Posted December 21, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 21, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Echoing the idea of the Northern group - anyone interested in a low-key, snap meeting in London on New Year's eve? I was thinking of an 11:30 meetup at one or two locations, either Embankment or Picadilly Circus. I'm sure we'd be able to find a hostelry for lunch, somewhere. If anyone is enthusiastic about this, let me know. I reckon we could finish early afternoon so we all get back home in time for seeing in 2009. LouisB PS I won't be offended if no one goes for the idea!

andybarton Posted December 21, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 21, 2008 I hope you get a better response than I did Louis One day (not that one!) I'd like to join you on one of your Smithfield jaunts. I'd like to trace the footsteps on my family who used to live there, and it's always better when you have someone who knows the area with you
ejd Posted December 21, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 21, 2008 I'd be very happy to join you. John
biglouis Posted December 23, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted December 23, 2008 John, at the moment it is you and me! Let's see of someone else comes out of the woodwork before making any final decisions! LouisB
steve kessel Posted December 25, 2008 Share #5 Posted December 25, 2008 Louis I could be up for this. Best wishes Steve
biglouis Posted December 25, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted December 25, 2008 Louis I could be up for this. Best wishes Steve Three's even better than two. Perhaps a few more may yet join in. Any preference about where we should meet for this? My suggestion for either Picadilly or Embankment but I'm open to suggestion. LouisB
MPerson Posted December 26, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Louis count me in. Just a thought but as the West End will probably be heaving with the Sales and men putting up barriers for the evenings festivities. How about a stroll along the South Bank (Bandit country - check your visa is in date!). Plenty of photo ops and inns. If it's moist there's the Tate, Hay's Galleria etc. Could either meet at Tower and walk West or Westminster and go East.
earleygallery Posted December 26, 2008 Share #8 Posted December 26, 2008 I might be up for this, but plans for NYE are still uncertain. London Bridge could be another good meeting point? Can walk along the river, into the City or just find a pub in Borough Market!
biglouis Posted December 26, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted December 26, 2008 OK, looks like it is snowballing, by my count we are up to Steve, Andy, John, possibly James and me. I like Andy's idea and he has a point. Picadilly etc probably will be heaving. Tower sounds like a really good idea. How is Tower Hill on the District line for people? It is a good starting point and we can walk over the bridge along the bank and as Andy say's probably find a good spot for some lunch/chat etc. I have to say it could be real brass monkeys so I may be being a bit ambitious about how long we can stay outside! Be great to see everyone and finally meet Andy, as well. LouisB PS If Tower is not convenient then I'm open to suggestions as I can pretty much make anywhere in that area from where I live. petewayne Posted December 26, 2008 Share #10 Posted December 26, 2008 Not sure yet on where I will be NYE, but if I am home I will try and head into London
MPerson Posted December 26, 2008 Share #11 Posted December 26, 2008 I'll be heading in from Rayners Lane so anywhere will suit me. If it is cold I shall be wearing my sequined Damart undies
spylaw4 Posted December 26, 2008 Share #12 Posted December 26, 2008 Were I not in Santiago de Chile on NYE, I would be with you! Have a good outing and a Happy New Year to you all.
gravastar Posted December 27, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 27, 2008 I might be up for this, but I need to keep a close eye on what trains are running from/to the Peterborough area. A late journey back could offer some interesting photo opportunities on the train . Bob.
farnz Posted December 28, 2008 Share #14 Posted December 28, 2008 Oops, just spotted this one! (Note to self: visit this forum more regularly.) The spirit is willing but the diary is weak. I'd love to join you all but my movements are also unclear around that time at the moment - waiting for whispy prior arrangements to sort themselves out or not - I'll know a bit closer to time. I plan to waste some more megapixels taking wobbly overexposed shots of whiz-bangs with friends later on so I should be able to "do lunch if a window opens up". (I've been waiting years to use that awful piece of 'biznis-speak'! ) Pete.

biglouis Posted December 29, 2008 Author Share #17 Posted December 29, 2008 OK, well the event is shaping up nicely. I am taking the lack of an alternative suggestion to mean we are agreed that we will start at Tower Hill at 11:30 and take it from there. We'll move off over the bridge towards the south side if anyone is late but we'll wait until 11:45 in case of stragglers. If anyone wants my mobile as a contingency then PM me and I'll send it to you LouisB
MPerson Posted December 29, 2008 Share #18 Posted December 29, 2008 Okey dokey - see you there. How about the giant sundial just outside the tube station in Trinity Place - easy to spot. farnz Posted December 29, 2008 Share #19 Posted December 29, 2008 Andy, Since you've mentioned earlier that you're coming in from Rayner's Lane, are you aware that the Piccadilly Line will be suspended between Rayner's Lane and Uxbridge on 31st? (Don't know if it affects your journey but thought it best to mention it anyway! ) Other planned works LUL closures on 31st are: Hammersmith and City: Barking to Whitechapel Waterloo and City: (surprise, surprise!) LUL closures map for 31st December Pete.
