What is Leica MP-3?

The MP-3 is actually newer than the current MP. It was a special model created for the LHSA. It incorporated some of the features, such as the manual frame counter, of the original 1950's MP's.

I'm sure others can add more details.

As noted above - it was a limited edition body made for the LHSA. 500 bodies in black paint, 500 in chrome. There were also matching Leicavits and 50 1.4 Summilux asph available as well. I personally think it's the best handling and nicest looking M body I've used...that's just my opinion of course.

As said above, the MP-3 is the nicest Leica I've had the pleasure of using. They made 1000 bodies - 500 chrome, 500 black paint, and some came as part of a set with a matching-numbers Leicavit MP and retro-designed 50mm Summilux ASPH. The 'oily bits' are pure MP - that means a fully mechanical metered body. However, to that it ads:

- Vulkanite Finish

- M2 framecounter

- 35-50-90 framelines

- M3 top-plate

- M3 Leica Engraving

Small differences (and some are available a la carte), but they really make the camera an absolute joy to use.

My chrome set is my go-to low ISO (up to 400) shooter.

As Julian says, it is more-or-less a current MP in most respects. The thing that I really like about it is the solitary framelines for 35, 50 and 90mm lenses. I got a taste for those from using a Voigtlander R4 which has a solitary 28mm frameline. The MP3 has a 0.72x magnification, BTW. Below is a pic of mine sporting a 35mm Summicron v1.

I have a 28 Cron ASPH & 50mm f/1.4 ASPH for my M8, what happen if I mount a 28mm lens to the MP-3? I have to use an external finder for framing?

As the MP-3 has a 0.72 magnification but no 28mm frame, you could use the whole finder area to estimate the view of the 28mm lens. An accessory 28mm finder would of course be more accurate but, also less convenient.

Best,

Jan

ddp, wow, this is beautifull.

Thank you!

I'm glad to see others using this camera as well. The MP3 is my main camera...and as others have stated - the simplicity of the framelines is very attractive to me. I'm glad i was able to snag one while they were priced somewhat "normally."

Normally I prefer the chrome Leica's but the black paint MP-3 looks breathtakingly good.

I guess a chrome MP-3 is close to a M2, at least in appearance?

It looks just like an M3, with the M2 counter.

I guess I'll just have to take a photo of my chrome baby...

Watch this space :D

I have the chrome one, and IMHO it is the nicest Leica M ever made.

Forgive the grubbiness - she's back from another day's hard shooting.

Speaking of which, Ivar - yours looks like it needs a day out on the streets :p
