Kodachrome 64 processing turn-around

Today I received a processed K64 film which I posted in UK on 11th November to Switzerland from where, I presume, it was sent to America. (Dwayne's Photo in Parsons KS USA was the processing house.)

Having conditioned myself to a wait of many weeks, I was most pleasantly surprised with a two week turnaround. Well done to all concerned! First impressions are promising. Now to tackling the scanning.

Sorry but I have a stupid question.

I have 50 rolls of K64 unused.Am I right in thinking that the processing costs are including in the film price or have I been dreaming?

I have read about "envelopes" that were with the film at purchase but the film I have is just "bricks" of film.

If the processing is not included (which I am assuming) does anyone know what the costs are if I send off to the Lausanne lab (who then send on to the U.S)?

thanks for any input

Andy

As I remember, the included envelopes either recently "expired" or can be still used only for a short time (could be end of this year). Since I sent my films directly to Dwayne's Photo, I pay the prices published on their web site. Without the postage fee for sending the films directly to them, I have payed ~ $30 for three films 135-24 the last time. Shipping cost is the same for one up to six rolls and developing cost is per film. I have also heard that the way via Walmart (?) is cheaper than direct sending to Dwayne's.

It is quit expensive, though ... :(

Cheers,

Gabor

That's good to hear. Must get some out of the fridge but I am in B&W mode at present and can't raise the enthusiasm for colour

I've got a few rolls in the freezer. I'm not aware that the envelopes have any expiry date as such. Any Kodachrome I've ever bought has always had an envelope included for the processing - I'm not sure if they ever supplied it any other way, given that you have to send it to them for processing anyway.

Andy, I believe the film code carries a P at the end (which is also marked on the cassette) which indicates that the film was purchased as 'Process Paid'. I think you still need the yellow envelope.

Kodachrome is (only!) sold with processing included in Germany.

Kodachrome is (only!) sold without processing included in the USA.

The Kodak envelope is NOT the prepaid voucher (cutting the marked edge or not tells the lab if you wish them to be framed or not), it´s the cartridge itself (there´s a prepaid note on it, when bought in Germany).

Kodak Germany collects Kodachromes and send them to Switzerland, they collect all european KCs and send them to USA. It depends on your "lucky" timing if you meet the right date they send it to Switzerland and later to USA. 2 weeks possible, if you have bad luck in timing, it can be 3+ weeks.

I recently used some old Wimbledon Kodak envelopes that I found for some processing at Lausanne, and had no problem. Both the film (25 asa) and the envelopes were from the early 90's, and I was very happy with the whole servicing and turnaround time.

I have actually started increasing my use of Kodachrome quite significantly- and find it very competitively priced at 7dayshop.com - Online shopping made easy !

I really hope that the recurring rumours of it's possible demise are untrue. Perhaps Leica can buy the rights and outsource production to China if Kodak ever decide to withdraw from this market.

I'm a fan of Kodachrome and this rather baroque method of getting it processed. The little yellow and red boxes of film that I have (bought from 7dayshop.com - Online shopping made easy ! in Guernsey) all bear a little note saying that processing by Kodak is included, and there is also a message printed on the film cannisters to the same effect. The envelopes are in each of the little boxes.

The Kodak web site has a fairly informative page on Kodachrome processing KODACHROME Processing Laboratories and the FAQ page is also helpful.

OK, never knew that - seems odd given that only one place can process it! Must be some 'financial' reason why its like that I guess.

I think it was some anti trust or lack of competitiveness thing.

Mike

Edit: The following is extracted from Wikipedia.

Due to the complexity of its processing, Kodachrome was initially sold at a price which included processing by Kodak. A mailer was included with the film at the time of purchase, which the photographer used to send exposed films, slide or movie, to one of several designated Kodak laboratories, where the film was processed, mounted in 2" x 2" cardboard mounts in the case of 35 mm slides, and returned by mail to the sender. After 1954, as a result of the case United States v. Eastman Kodak Co., this practice was prohibited in the United States as anticompetitive.[12] Kodak entered into a consent decree ending the product tying arrangement in which it sold Kodachrome only with Kodak processing included, and was required to allow independent labs to acquire the chemicals and machinery needed to process Kodachrome films. Outside the United States processing envelopes continued to be included with the purchase of a roll of Kodachrome, but within the United States Kodak sold processing envelopes separately. (Kodak discontinued the production of film mailers in 2007, but will continue to honor existing mailers until at least the end of 2009.)

Hi there Andy,

If you wish, send me a private message with your address, and I will be glad to send you my remaining 3 Kodachrome mailers for free, as I have no need for these anymore (I only buy in Europe now). They will be honoured by Kodak Lausanne, who will process your film.

All the best,
