dennersten Posted November 23, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 23, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought myself a cheap M5. I Always wanted to try one. I felt it where a big hole in my "collection" Could you please have a look on this one: Leica M5 på Tradera. Leica | Systemkameror | Analoga kameror | Foto, This is the one i just bought at the Swedish Ebay. Have a look at the "lump" under the cameratrigger. I managed to find 30 - 40 pictures of M5, but all without that lump. Where there any variations of the M5? And does'nt it look like black paint? dennersten Posted November 23, 2008 Author Share #2 Posted November 23, 2008 "lump" is maybe not a good word. Protruding part under the trigger is maybe better?
Guest Plaubel Posted November 23, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 23, 2008 "lump" is maybe not a good word. Protruding part under the trigger is maybe better? A REPAIR? The protruding region seems to be slightly darker.
earleygallery Posted November 23, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 23, 2008 Looks like a DIY modification to cover the shutter dial from the front, probably just glued on.
dennersten Posted November 23, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted November 23, 2008 Looks like a DIY modification to cover the shutter dial from the front, probably just glued on. What does a DIY modification mean? But i guess you are right makes no sense otherwise.

telewatt Posted November 23, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 23, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looks like a DIY modification to cover the shutter dial from the front, probably just glued on. .. ...this is not wrong... ...I just had problems with a DMR weel ... ....my MP killed it while doing a job with more Kameras.... regards, Jan
luigi bertolotti Posted November 23, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 23, 2008 Dennersten... there is something else... in one of the three views you can see clearly that there is an ENGRAVING on the back, under the cocking lever, with a number that seems unrelated to the s/n of the body. Couldn't read the letters, but this can explain the modification too... it seems to be made to avoid thet "something" interferes with the time setting knob... doubice Posted November 23, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 23, 2008 The M5's shutter speed dial protrudes over the front edge of the camera, so that it can be easily adjusted with one's forefinger. Now - since it can be easily adjsuted, it can also be accidentally moved. Not that it happened to me when I owned an M5 but, it is possible. I am certain that the protrusion on your M5 is a glued-on piece to make it more difficult to move the shutter speed dial accidentally. Definitely not a factory modification...... Best, Jan (another one)
dkCambridgeshire Posted November 23, 2008 Share #10 Posted November 23, 2008 Looks a bit odd. And the vulcanite seems to have been lifted on the top corner adjacent to the "swelling" ... I enlarged the photo and rotated it. Cheers dunk

luigi bertolotti Posted November 23, 2008 Share #12 Posted November 23, 2008 I thought that maybe the description could include some info... my knowledge of Swedish is 0,001%... so obtained a very funny automatic Italian translation... hope that someone can appreciate its intrinsic nonsense...
echorec Posted November 23, 2008 Share #13 Posted November 23, 2008 Hej, I have owned exactly the same type of camera: Swedish Radio engraving and with the extra protruding part. So, I guess SR did that with all their M5 cameras. It did not look too DIY so either Leitz made it for them or someone else who knew what he was doing did it. echorec Posted November 23, 2008 Share #14 Posted November 23, 2008 Luigi, the words are "Tillhör Sveriges Radio" = Property of Swedish Radio.

luigi bertolotti Posted November 23, 2008 Share #16 Posted November 23, 2008 Fine Gunnar !!! End of the mistery of the engraving... but i still wnder why they wanted the protrusion... Sweden is often cold... maybe they tought that using gloves it would have been too easy to move accidently the time knob...
echorec Posted November 24, 2008 Share #17 Posted November 24, 2008 Maybe you are right At least today is very cold, snowy & windy...
mooky Posted November 24, 2008 Share #18 Posted November 24, 2008 As far as I know, the only external variation was the addition of a 3rd strap lug - the early versions had two.
someonenameddavid Posted November 24, 2008 Share #19 Posted November 24, 2008 So either it's a super-rare factory modified Leica M5 worth a squintillion dollars, or.... A Zorki fake;) david
ho_co Posted November 24, 2008 Share #20 Posted November 24, 2008 Just curious--why did Swedish Radio need multiple M5s? It's a great, solid camera, of course--but in the US at least, radio doesn't transmit pictures.
