cfc247 Posted November 11, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering what what some of your filter solutions are for your Digilux 2? I primarily have in mind UV and Circular and ND filters. Will any 69mm work well? Or do most of you use step up rings? If yes, any recommended brands? Thanks. dugby Posted November 11, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 11, 2008 Hi Mark. I am an advocate for not using filters unless your planning for an "effect". I believe that if Leica intended their lenses to have a $1 piece of optically-questionable 2mm glass in front on the beautifully crafted Vario-summicron and expensive lens elements, it would have been designed and built onto the lense right from the beginning. So-called "expensive brand" filters are still just a piece of glass manufactured for less than $1. Thus on my D2, I only use the Leica ND filter when the scene is too bright. laptoprob Posted November 11, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 11, 2008 With a step-up filter I use 72mm B+W filters. Mostly for black and whites though. The D2 is brilliant with black and white jpg's! The bulky original hood doesn't fit over 72mm, so I took a big 72mm close-up ring, kicked out the useless glass and cut the ring out to a non-vignetting petal shape. Because the fantastic lens can flare.
jaapv Posted November 11, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 11, 2008 Heliopan can supply any 69 mm filter you want. I can sympathise. That huge front lens does look vulnerable. I do use a "protective" filter in adverse conditions. It is less degrading to the image quality than an UV filter, and more shatterproof. The original lenshood fits over the filters. stuny Posted November 11, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 11, 2008 Mark - Many of us just use the lens hood which provides quite a bit of distance between bad things and the front element. Sometimes I'll use the camera without the hood.
Riley Posted November 11, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 11, 2008 Polarisers and Graduated ND filters can still be useful but there are only aftermarket versions so you will need a 69-72mm step-up ring to make them fit they are around
audidudi Posted November 11, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) All of those filters are available in 69mm diameter in the Heliopan brand from B&H Photo. Surprisingly, they also list a Leica-brand ND filter, although its status is shown as "accepting orders": 69mm | B&H Photo Video

cfc247 Posted November 11, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted November 11, 2008 Thank you all for the helpful comments. For the sake of keeping my budget as low as possible, I am thinking of getting the 69-72 step up ring and use my current filters. It will also give me an opportunity to use the camera simply with the hood and give it a shot without committing to a set of 69mm filters. I was hoping my camera would arrive today. But just realized that the post office is closed because of Veterans Day. The suspense continues yet another day...The agony! Happy Shooting

It will also give me an opportunity to use the camera simply with the hood and give it a shot without committing to a set of 69mm filters. I'm on a self-imposed budget myself, but over the space of a little more than a year, I managed to buy on eBay several new and unused 69mm Heliopan filters for fractions of their B&H prices. The only one that I use regularly, though, is the polarizer and I recommend spending the extra money for the SH-PMC version, as I found it to be slightly more flare-resistant than their regular polarizer. Although B&H wants $224 for this filter, I bought mine on eBay for only $80, so deals can be had if you're patient and/or lucky...
cfc247 Posted November 11, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted November 11, 2008 audidudi, I will definitely sniff around ebay when i get a chance. $80 is a steal! You really got a deal.
