Andy and fellow Leica shooter folks. I just checked my itinerary and I shall definitely be in Frankfurt at this time. While my wife is otherwise engaged I am free to scoot on over to Solms for the duration. I cannot believe my luck that this event should come up during my very first visit to Germany (visiting from Australia). Anyway for previous travellers, what is the most practical transport for me from Frankfurt to Solms. Can I jump on a train and then maybe meet some folks in Wetzlar for the last part of the trip?

Can you folks let me know if you are staying in a common location for the duration. The guesthouse sounds promising. I'm buying the conversational German CDs . Currently I remember at least 6 words from my high school German LONG ago :o .

Geoff

There will be a few of us here (me included) flying into Frankfurt and hiring a car, so I am sure something could be arranged.

Last year we found a very reasonable guesthouse/hotel to stay in, and when we visited Solms, they were very accommodating of non-German speakers (including me). If there isn't an official visit as part of the itinerary, I'd happily go along with you.

Had a great time last year, and I am looking forward to the same this time. :)

Geoff,

According to the Deutsche Bahn timetable, the German railway, you can get from Frankfurt Main station to Solms in about an hour and fifteen minutes with one change at Geissen. So if you don't manage to hook up with Andy there's another way to get there.

The timetable is interactive online so you can plug in your dates and times and play. (The English language option is in a drop-down box at top centre to the right of the little German flag.)

It's not so much a case of getting to Solms first off but of probably heading for Bad Homburg, which puts you within easy range of either the Guesthouse in Westerfeld or the hotel in the Hessenpark - if I quote Robert Hill from a previous meeting, there could well be a number of people with cars nearby at that point

Thanks, Robert, that's good to know. Frankfurt to Bad Homburg is about a 20 minute train journey with no changes.

good evening, all

i must have missed something. bad homburg is a lovely town, with casino, kurpark, shops etc, but it's 20km (as the crow flies) north of frankfurt airport, and wetzlar/solms is another 40km further north (again, straight line, not motorway).

have people stayed in bad homburg and commuted to past events? there are several nice small and larger hotels in wetzlar and surroundings which are quite a bit closer to the factory.

cheers

We are booked into the Intercontinental in Frankfurt from the 10th. I definitely plan to attend and hope to hitch a ride with Andy. I have now found the Hessenpark location. Could anyone let me now approximate distances from Hessenpark, Solms and the accommodation where people will be staying?

For info last year some stayed at a hotel in the Hessenpark and some in Westerfeld, near Bad Homburg

Great i am on! My wife is joining also. But she is not at all interested in cameras or photography. Could somebody please suggest some activites for her? She is interested in art and interior design. I've heard that there should be a Bauhaus museum in the Frankfurt area?

Hi dennersten,

the Hessenpartk is a museum by itself. You do not only find a comprehensive number of examples for rural architecture from central Germany but also the original interieur.

In Frankfurt your wife will have the choice between the only german Architektur Museum at the Main river, nearby the Museum für angewandte Kunst (Design) and the Städel Kunstmuseum just to mention a few. Frankfurt has around 40 museums for Fine Art of all epocas and styles. Have a look at frankfurt.de or Museen in Frankfurt am Main - Museumsufer Frankfurt.

Around 30km south of Frankfurt in Darmstadt you will find the museums on the Mathildenhöhe, which are famous for their Jugendstil-collections Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt Russland 1900 Kunst Ausstellung Museum Art Exhibition Institut Hochzeitsturm Ralf Beil Wissenschaftsstadt Kuenstlerkolonie Olbrich Hoetger Mueller Suedhessen Freizeit Kultur Veranstaltungen Ausgehen Event Becker Späth. Nearby you can visit an exhibition of key products of BRAUN Design which is in the tradition of the bauhaus Institut für Neue Technische Form.

I am shure your wife will be please as much as you from your stay in southern Hassia.

Regards

Friedhelm

I have just started the process of booking a room at the Landhotel Velte in Neu-Anspach

Several of us stayed there last year, and apart from having a bar that closed early (probably not a bad thing, come to think of it :) ) it was very comfortable and very reasonable.

There's no reason to suppose that the former will not be the same this year, but for those of us dealing with a basket-case currency, the latter may be more of a challenge this time round.
