MBP has been updated. but from now onwards it will come only with glossy screen. For photo editing it can be a pain [well, actually huge PITA] . I am used to matte screen. may be others who use glossy screen will differ. no blu-ray as well. so keep hard backing up on DVDs.
Advertisement Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Hi leica007, Take a look here Updated Macbook pro : glossy screen only. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest noah_addis Posted October 14, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 14, 2008 Is the glossy screen all that bad? I have tried my girlfriend's macbook and it seems fine. I think the new metal 13-in macbook seems ideal for my need for a small travel laptop, but now you have me worried about the glossy screen.
ojuicearts Posted October 14, 2008 Share #3 Posted October 14, 2008 Wow, the new product line of apple looks very ugly with this black stripe around the screen.
dempski Posted October 15, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 15, 2008 First that screen and all that glare. And now, no Firewire 400. All my drives and negative scanner use Firewire only. I was waiting to get a new laptop, one the new Macbook Pros, but now it looks like I'll try a discontinued model. Another mightly step backward. I guess next I'll get a manual focus camera....oh, wait, I already did that.
rafael_macia Posted October 15, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 15, 2008 No Firewire 400 ... I have some Lacie HD's with FW 400. I guess triple interface .... insurance for the future ... is the way to go First that screen and all that glare. And now, no Firewire 400. All my drives and negative scanner use Firewire only. steamboat Posted October 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 15, 2008 That new 13" is sweet and it would be a perfect accessory to the M8 EXCEPT for the lack of the firewire, as mentioned above. I'd gladly trade one of the USBs for a FireWire. The 128GB solid-state drive option is very cool. The solid-state drive is the future.
John Thawley Posted October 15, 2008 Share #7 Posted October 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies for off-the-track thread. MBP has been updated. but from now onwards it will come only with glossy screen. For photo editing it can be a pain [well, actually huge PITA] . I am used to matte screen. may be others who use glossy screen will differ. no blu-ray as well. so keep hard backing up on DVDs. I used a glossy screen on my first MBP... then went back to matte screen on my current MBP. Guess what? I'm going back to glossy. My concern was that the glossy was giving me a false read on color and saturation... images looked glorious. But I was concerned they only looked that way on MY screen. Since though, I find it not as easy to identify sharpness on the matte screen. At home, I have a 23 cinema that I use in tandem with my laptop. There is a difference... images appear sharper once I have them on my screen at home. I know the home display isn't glossy either... but it just seems the glossy screen doesn't reveal the pixel grid as much as the matte screen. John Thawley Posted October 15, 2008 Share #8 Posted October 15, 2008 Speaking of monitors, the new 24" monitor designed to mate with the MBP is a spectacular idea. I dock my current MBP at home... while it's not a big deal since all my external drives are daisy chained Firewire 800, I do like the idea of a monitor with the built in power supply and cable connections. It's almost like a docking station... makes a lot of sense. And... you have to hand it to them from a marketing standpoint as it makes the pretty bold statement of announcing that these machines are as powerful as a desktop and really all you need. And they are. JT
Guest stnami Posted October 15, 2008 Share #9 Posted October 15, 2008 ...buy the 17 " and have a screen choice
ljclark Posted October 15, 2008 Share #10 Posted October 15, 2008 The question is: Does it have an anti-reflection coating? I'm not a Mac guy. but...I had a Sony laptop with a "glossy" screen. It had anti-reflection coating and was lovely to work with. When I replaced it, I looked at an HP that had a glossy screen without coating...Totally sucked. My current Toshiba laptop has glossy with coating and is great.

tgray Posted October 15, 2008 Share #12 Posted October 15, 2008 I think the pro has a firewire port. The regular doesn't. I edit photos all the time on my macbook with a glossy screen. It's not that bad.
sagarwal Posted October 15, 2008 Share #13 Posted October 15, 2008 NO Firewire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=Fxxxxxxxxxxxxxck book pro! The new MBP has one FW800 port. Perhaps you're talking about the MacBook (not the Pro version)?

carstenw Posted October 15, 2008 Share #15 Posted October 15, 2008 There is no 13" MacBook Pro. That is the MacBook. The MacBook Pro is 15", and has a single Firewire 800 port, which is compatible with Firewire 400, by the way. You just need an 800->400 cable or an adapter. I was also thinking about the MacBook Pro before the announcement, but removing Firewire ports is the wrong direction, IMO. Firewire is still better/faster/nicer/more reliable than USB, and I buy everything I can in Firewire. Firewire hubs do work, though, unlike many USB hubs. Firewire is used by many pros for tethering, and removing a port makes this more awkward, in case you also use an external drive for your photos. I am torn and annoyed. I was hoping for more substance and less flash in the new MacBook Pro. Now I am considering getting the latest old one.
marknorton Posted October 15, 2008 Share #16 Posted October 15, 2008 I am torn and annoyed. Sadly, as I've (re-)discovered with the M8.2, manufacturers don't always take favourite products in the direction I would like.
pierovitch Posted October 15, 2008 Share #17 Posted October 15, 2008 Firewire is great for portable drives but previous macs have not had enough power to run LaCie portables via USB. Lets hope the USB power has been upgraded.
Mauribix Posted October 15, 2008 Share #18 Posted October 15, 2008 I am torn and annoyed. I was hoping for more substance and less flash in the new MacBook Pro. Now I am considering getting the latest old one. The substance is there: double GPU unit... I don't see many other laptops with two video cards. And it's not just for playin' I guess. BTW at the actual price the 15pro @ 1799€ vs the 13macbook (1199€) is more than something to think about. IMHO
markgay Posted October 15, 2008 Share #19 Posted October 15, 2008 Good news for Macbook users, not so for the Pro line. It's been reduced to a Macbook Plus. Macworld | First Look: MacBook and MacBook Pro No anti glare screen option. Can't change batteries externally - have to remove a cover like a mobile phone. How is that an improvement? (I have three batteries for my laptop) Concern about the keypad. The Macbook Pro had one of the best in the business. I personally don't like the keypad on the Air. All ports on one side. Idiocy. Has Apple seen a portable Sandisk card reader? It is one inch wide. With the USB ports side by side, you now make one of them inaccessible. The Macbooks are still wedded to Intel's PC-based motherboards (Windows can only use up to 4GB in theory, 3GB in practice). The maximum RAM remains at 4GB. That is a major bottleneck. Could Intel not have designed something special for Apple, as IBM used to for the Power PCs. In performance terms, I extensively reviewed PC laptops for a friend. The 9600 graphics card is fast (though gamers are already using newer, faster cards). The processor is a little faster than the previous Macbook Pro, but Intel's main focus has been cutting the power consumption, so it lasts about 10% longer (but it's more hassle to change batteries now) and is probably 11% faster. To repeat, the major bottleneck is 4GB of RAM, maximum. That kind of upgrade is equivalent to a mid-term upgrade, not a new product line. Those who think we have a new era of Macbook Pros are being swayed by the design changes. As to the Macbook, it is a major upgrade over the previous Macbook. It seems Apple is going after the mass market with this upgrade. The pro user, the serious amateur photographer etc will be disappointed. mjh Posted October 15, 2008 Share #20 Posted October 15, 2008 Apologies for off-the-track thread. MBP has been updated. but from now onwards it will come only with glossy screen. For photo editing it can be a pain [well, actually huge PITA] . I am used to matte screen. may be others who use glossy screen will differ. I’ve got a MacBook Pro 15" with a glossy screen. I used to be opposed to glossy screens in general, but this one isn’t quite as glossy as some; it is a good compromise really. BUT … the glossy screens of the new MacBook and MacBook Pro models are quite different – we are talking glass here, like the current iMacs have. These are reflective as hell, and while I might get used to it for use at home, I wouldn’t want to stare at my mirror image on a MacBook Pro screen. Apart from that, the loss of the trackpad button and Firewire (no Firewire at all with the MacBook, just Firewire 800 on the MacBook Pro) make it a less than attractive choice for me. Fortunately, I wasn’t planning to buy a new MacBook Pro before 2010 anyway.
