I "M" Spoiled

Well, my quest for a new toy continues.

I went to the local Best Buy to see the Canon G10, which they had in stock. Speaking purely for myself, I don't think I would find the camera as satisfying to use as even an old M. The optical viewfinder is small and I could not achieve a sharp focus anywhere throughout the diopter range. Although the LCD on the back is bright and big, it doesn't lend itself to discrete photography like an M does. I guess that means the D-Lux series probably won't be for me either. I'm sure both machines will yield excellent files, but it's the shooting experience that I'm looking for.

I would like to solicit inputs from anyone who uses a G-series or D-Lux and also uses an M. What are your techniques for discrete photography and how have you overcome the lack of an optical finder.

Happy shooting.

Eric

"EVEN".... What on earth do you mean? My 1954 M2 still beats almost anything made later...:)

(Well, don´t take my post TOO seriously.....;) )

Au contraire, I take it very seriously indeed - and agree! For pure, unalloyed pleasure, you can't beat an old M or Barnack. I've worn spectacles that put more of a barrier between me and my subject. :D

Regards,

Bill

My post, which was the first response, has been deleted by the moderator because I posted some non-Leica pictures, although I was the only one so far who addressed the question of the OP concerning the use of an LCD monitor vs an OVF for "discrete" photography. The moderation here is just too heavy-handed and I'm outta here, this time permanently.

HEY!

This is absolutely crazy! Mitch is a real asset in any forum I´ve found him contribute to, his images are first rate, and his opinions always give food for thought, even when one doesn´t share them entirely (one often does, however...).

So what if he did put some Ricoh images up to illustrate his point? I thought this was an independent forum, not part of the Leica advertising department.

Back away from this secterian stupidity, give Mitch a sincere apology, and ask him to please come back! This forum will lose a lot by chasing the likes of him away, and for such a narrow-minded reason, too....

And, make no mistake, this time my post is SERIOUS!!!

If what he/you say is true (the reason for deleting the post), I strongly agree with you. I have had Leica eq. for over 20 years and love my R's and M's. That being said, we need to be able to openly share our thoughts and perspectives. I understand that this is a Leica forum, but does that mean that I can not post my RD-1 pics taken with a Leica lens? Sorry if I do not fully understand the bylaws of this forum, but I would hope that our common appreciation of photography would provide a foundation on which we could share/debate our perspectives and work.

Before jumping to conclusions...

a) Read the rules:

"Prerequisite for placing a photo is that it has been made with Leica equipment and/or has a strong relationship to a Leica subject. For the avoidance of doubt, this includes the use of Leica lenses on third party bodies, Leica lenses on Leica partner cameras (e.g. Panasonic) and the use of third party lenses on Leica bodies. In general, photographs taken without the use of Leica equipment are not permitted. "

B) Let the moderator(s) have right of reply.

IMO this is one of the most lightly and sensibly moderated places on the internet. Compared, for instance, to RFF where the "umpiring decisions" tend to be both random and emotionally-charged, the LUF is a beacon of sanity.

Well, the OP specifically asked (after duly connecting to the M Leicas in contrast to a P/S): "What are your techniques for discrete photography and how have you overcome the lack of an optical finder. " This is a subject where Mitch does have considerable experience and expertise, and he did answer it, illustrated with some of his own images. Furthermore, he is the only one so far that actually answered the OP questions (while the rest of us joked...). The term "in general" in the rule you quote implies the possibility of exceptions, and I feel this is the very kind of situation where an exception is called for.

The moderator has only to write and post his reply right here; nobody could, or indeed would, prevent him, obviously. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting his clarification.

Also, his decisions are his own, and none of us have any formal right of appeal against them. But, for the very reasons you state, i e the generally sensible and civilized tone here, I value this forum, and I reserve the right to speak out when something happens that threatens to diminish its value. And the loss of a knowledgeable and prolific contributor is such a thing. I don´t feel that enforcing a general rule in this kind of borderline case is worth it; that´s my opinion, but obviously not that of the moderator. And the decision is his, not mine. Only, as a regular here for some time, I deplore it.
