I posted a question on the Fred Miranda Forum I guess I could also post here asking how Nikon Raw files compare to Canon Raw files when converted to Black and White. I don't think there is a camera out there that can beat the M8 but I'm wondering if Nikon comes closer than Canon?

Canon Vs. Nikon - FM Forums

Any examples would be appreciated.

I don't know. I'm pretty blown away by the files of my D3. Of course it's all up in the hands of the photographer. I've seen amazing b&w conversions from the M8 and others that make me wonder why that person feels the need for an $8K camera. Same goes for any brand.

Anyway, here's a quickie with the D3 yesterday. ISO 3200, 135mm DC @ f2, 1/90th. Quickie grayscale conversion with a little tone curve bump. I know I could do better if I had time. I might actually like a bit of grain as well (amazing considering it's 3200).

I think Nikon has more "film like" files than Canon but that's only my opinion. So much of it is up to the skill of the photographer both when shooting and post processing.

One more. Zeiss 35 ZF at f/2 iso 3200. Alien Skin conversion with the Acros 100 setting.

I love the M8 for carry around everyday use (and traveling), but for pro situations the D3 can really save the day. I felt comfortable shooting at 3200 (and I really didn't have a choice considering the lighting) for a dbl page spread.

At 320 though the M8 is pretty hard to beat.

So, is that an M8 photograph, or a Nikon one?

If so, I repeat, what does this have to do with Leica? Is this a forum for comparing Nikon vs Canon shots now? If it is, what's the point of this forum? Why do I spend my time here, Moderating it (alongside others)? Why not go to dpreview, photonet or FredMiranda?

Maybe the fact that most of us shoot with different cameras and would trust the opinion of a longtime Leica user hen deciding on getting a complimentary system (no, Leicas don't do it all though some try). God this forum has really become grumpy. Think I'm done.

My interest in posting the question is to see which comes closest to Leica since I am convinced that the M8 is in a class by itself, I've always made that clear!

Many of us have alternative gear and how we combine its use with our Leica gear I think is a useful discussion on this forum. If not here among Leica users where else? In my reference to the FM forum above I include two M8 pictures.

This looks like the stamp of the M8, am I correct?

No this is the D3 at 3200. Thanks for opening things up a bit Wilfredo but I guess it's against the rules. Sorry, i just happened to be working on those images so i thought i'd give you a sampler. For some M8 b&w conversions see my Filson gallery on my website.

probably because, its quite impossible to do level headed comparisons in any or those places, if you dont believe me, just try it at FM.

all the more reason not to start the same thing here!

the single greatest advantage of this forum is the lack of mindless argueing about whether Canon or Nikon is 'the best'.

Of course the counter is the rather parochial 'leica is the only thing that counts' cheerleading that crops up here and there, but given that the forum is specific to a single brand thats hardly surprising.

lets not drag yet another forum into the morass of mediocrity, pretty please

I also fear nonsense between canon and nikon. I dont think you see some differences there if they used similar lenses.

I think for B&W, lenses play far BIGGER roll than sensors. Pictures with ZF and Nikon look nicer than zoom. I get feeling of pictures taken with zoom that those remind me of p&s :) Dont blame on me when Im used to Leica ;) I remember experiences with 50mm summicron and Rd1 and 50mm Nikkor 1.8 with D70. That opened my eyes.

Don't lock it please!

This is all about Canon and Nikon IN RELATION TO the M8, specifically about the ability of the M8 to produce a superior file for BW processing. There are many people who believe that... so let's have the discussion.

For those of you that don't use other systems, then don't read the thread.

For those of us that do use other systems alongside our M8s and DMRs, this is a valuable comparison.

After all, no-one jumps on the film forum when they discuss film or developers :) What does "the integrity of film" have to do with Leica?

It's time to split the forums IMO, and now we have M, S, R, Digilux, C/D-Lux et al ... perhaps we can have an alternative camera/system forum for folks who are interested in other makes such as the one on Fred Miranda's site. Then those who come here mainly because this is a "Leica" forum can skip it altogether.

That is pretty impressive, it looks like what I would typically expect from an M8 file, except that with the M8 you get that special quality without the use of special software to achieve a film look. I'm leaning toward the conclusion that nothing else really compares to the M8, except with the use of additional software. That's helpful to know. The first shot posted IMHO is a very good B&W image but it doesn't have the texture I see in M8 files and film.

Andy:

Fear not. I believe that Leica establishes the benchmark. This thread and posting pictures for comparisons sake will only promote Leica. Please, let's not shoot ourselves in the foot. We all appreciate your gift to the rest of us.

Here are some examples of what I mean. If I said I shot these with T-Max 400 and say a Leica M7, I don't think anyone would question it.

Wilfredo,

come on, you've got your thread on FM, you have promoted it here, now how about taking the hint.

Jamie,

I usually agree with what you post here. On this occassion absolutely not, for the reasons stated above.

If there is no other forum where this kind of discussion is possible, maybe its worth reflecting for a moment on why that is, and considering if its such a good idea to nurture the same conditions here....

Meantime I just checked the FM thread, and its still perfectly civil. Looks like a better place for a cross platform discussion than on a platform specific forum.
