(If the one for my Rolleiflex doesn't count.) But I still love them and hope there would be more of them. Hell, I wouldn't mind if all hoods were rectangular! They are much more efficient and look pro but still cool . And paired with a less-coated lens, the combo couldn't be more tempting. Even Voigtländer, which has really published some nice products, has only three rectangular hoods (if I'm correct). Does anyone know is there a manufacturer of rectangular spare hoods? Listings of Leica lenses which have (or take) such a hood, would be nice. And pictures and praising, like in other "I love" -threads too . Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

kenneth Posted September 24, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 24, 2008 I must say, I cannot get that carried away with lens hoods, square or circular, as long as they do the purpose required of them. I have a 35mm Summicron asph lens with a rectangular hood and I am sure it was developed so as to be less obtrusive in the viewfinder. As far as being more pro looking, I cannot comment, I guess it rather looks more traditional so I would say not pro looking. JBA Posted September 25, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 25, 2008 Yes, square hoods look pretty cool. In fact, one of my lenses sports the king of all square hoods, the 19mm Elmarit-R. Then there's the 24mm Elmarit-R shade with its built-in wheel for spinning a polarizinf filter. And, of course, the hood for the 35 Summicron-M asph is a small masterpiece. Which is not to say I don't also appreciate the very functional and cool-looking vented hood that came with my pre-asph 50 'Lux. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

It couldn't be any smaller from any point of that rectangular one without causing vingetting, so the smallest it can get is big enough to just touch the corners of it. Thus it leaves completely useless spaces shaped like a sliced circle around the picture area. So the round hood is a) excessively big and less efficient in shading. Why to shade round shaped pictures when they are rectangular? The only reason I can possibly think of is the price. Including the price to design different caps. Other awesome "super design innovation" is a hood _not_ connected to the same thread as the filters. Like the bayonet in the Zeiss ZM lenses. So in my ideal world all lenses would have rectangular hoods attached with a bayonet for them only, like Rolleiflexes . Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I do prefer the 35/1,4 hood I lost it no more than 2 weeks ago... after I think 5 or 6 events of fallen-found soon after: it's its fault, but I felt stupid: indeed "I did told you..." I also lost the cap from my 28mm APSH E-M, sqaure is seemingly optimized, but I prefer a round one that is stowed reversed on the lens. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Gerry The round vented black paint hoods are becoming scarce. I was fortunate to find one, new in the box recently, and my wallet was unfortunate as a matter of consequence.
