Well done Leica, better late than never - and if you're going to be late, good job coming up with an impressive offering. I recently evaluated the Leaf AFi and the H3D for my industrial landscapes, and decided against them - too big, and not weather-sealed. I opted for the Canon 1Ds Mk III. Phase One sells through selected dealers/retailers . You can also get Phaseone system through Phase One's regional sales Manager ; for the UK - it's Eric Joakim. So, I think it's not about getting access to a wider network, may be Phase One type direct correspondence with the professionals. And another point: won't Leica S2 canabalise Phase One's camera and backs? Or, who knows there might be a merger on the cards between the two companies - may be three if you take Mamiya - in the near future : they call it consolidation. perhaps, every body is running short of cash. Overgaard Posted September 22, 2008 Share #171 Posted September 22, 2008 Phase One has pro reps and dealers where the S2 will be along all the pro camera systems, pro printers, pro computer systems, pro seminars, pro software, pro service, etc. So the Phase One guys are present in the dealers showrooms and out with their clients several times every month, being the experts on how to implement a new MF camera in the workflow and all. So it's going to be different than the usual Leica shop, though I know a few shops internationally where the S2 could be doing fine because they have Leica wall-to-wall or simply those dealers where they already sell MF systems. I know Phase One for example has sample cameras in flightcases placed by their dealers so that pro's can lend the systems for their own testing. So that is a very smart move for both of them. WOW. more important than the specs are the intentions to handle the distribution and service through phaseone.. and along with the specs I'd like to see the raw pics to devour. I have been touting the quality and ability of Leica since the demise of the dmr and I feel justified in my faith in them.. proof of course will be in the pudding, which I hope to taste soon!! Phase are suddenly without a camera to sell backs for, unlike Hasselblad, Sinar and Leaf. And Leica is better off making bodies and lenses and leaving the electronics to Phase. The Phase One software will suit the technical colour consultants and photoshop professionals. The optics are designed for Digital performance and not just tweaked and software compensated like Hasselblad. Its a professional tool no intelligent auto on this one. I look forward to seeing one in person and learning more about it when the production models are ready next year. Personally I am very pleased that Leica evaluated the market and has moved strategically. Long term, and for a future R version based on some of the S2 technology, I think it's really a big step. I was never a fan of Mamiya so I'm happy to see Phase has a more promising partnership now. You are entitled to personal opinion, but do not underestimate Mamiya. Without a camera? They have their own. It's a pretty good one, I have played with it. It's another thing that they are customising their electronics for others. I have been vindicated in one way. In the M8.2 debate, I had mentioned that Leica is good in mechanical engineering but has fallen short in electronics and software development. Now, Phase One and Fujitsu have filled that gap. Yeah, I had also mentioned - it's a common knowledge now, anyway - that sensor and processor are the battleground. Leica S2 has arrived on the battleground with the help of Phase One and Fujitsu.
