jackal Posted September 19, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) we have the new fast lenses, a new 8.2 the uber-expensive studio camera is a given but there is a third product, maybe the best kept secret of all of them ? a cut down M R10 ? any ideas ? stunsworth Posted September 19, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 19, 2008 Based on what I've read here, S2, expensive - very expensive - MF camera intended for studio use - this is based on the 'S' in the name that everyone has been suggesting. Only a few days to go and I'll no doubt be proved to be totally wrong - I did predict that the new Noctilux would be 35mm.

like_no_other Posted September 19, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 19, 2008 Wasn't the S1 the Leica SCANNING camera? Why does Leica call the new camera S2 if it isn't the successor of S1? The successor would use at least the same principle for image recording which isn't true for the S2. Quite misleading name.
stunsworth Posted September 19, 2008 Share #7 Posted September 19, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wasn't the S1 the Leica SCANNING camera? Why does Leica call the new camera S2 if it isn't the successor of S1? Because it's intended to be used in a studio, not in the field. The letter refers to where it's used, not that it's a scanning camera.
like_no_other Posted September 19, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 19, 2008 Ok. I understand the logic. But Mr. Kaufmann was quoted that the new camera 'is as small as a DSLR'. Such a camera is not limited to a studio, but could be preferred used and bought by customers working mainly in studios because of it's ultra high resolution. andybarton Posted September 19, 2008 Share #9 Posted September 19, 2008 Dr Kaufmann knows what he's talking about I'm sure. My money, given what we think we know, is something between 35mm FF, and MF. The handiness of 35, the image quality of almost MF
Overgaard Posted September 19, 2008 Share #10 Posted September 19, 2008 Wasn't the S1 the Leica SCANNING camera? Why does Leica call the new camera S2 if it isn't the successor of S1? The successor would use at least the same principle for image recording which isn't true for the S2. Quite misleading name. All digital were scanning back in 1996 which is why the only digital were studio for packshots (product shots) and similar. I think the S reference is towards the quality, the versatility and simplicity of the S1. Overgaard Posted September 19, 2008 Share #11 Posted September 19, 2008 something between 35mm FF, and MF. The handiness of 35, the image quality of almost MF Agree. Except perhaps for the 'almost MF'. I hope and think it will be higher.
John Thawley Posted September 19, 2008 Share #12 Posted September 19, 2008 Is it too much to hope for a rangefinder in the $3500 price range? If Leica would open that market, it would make for a lot of people buying lenses. Isn't that similar to the shaving companies... give them the razor, sell them the blades? Just seems to me that $3500 would open a nice door for them, while not stooping to the lower-end of the market. JT

JT totally agree... forget summilux wide glass, forget studio for-hire only camera, this is the way for them to clock up lots of sales they would be raking it in imo with a cheaper RF maybe thats why they pushed the price of the 8.2 up so high and added a lot of features.... to distinguish it significantly from a new cut price M camera .... hmmm, there again, unlikley. We'll just have to wait and see
andybarton Posted September 19, 2008 Share #14 Posted September 19, 2008 ...forget summilux wide glass... I can't wait to see some results from a 21 Summilux, w_i_d_e open. I can almost guarantee that people will have their socks blown off by the wide angle, and narrow dof in the same image. It will be fantastic, and worth every penny, to some people. THIS is what Leica is all about. Pushing the boundaries, not giving a "me too" experience. I'd but a digital CL, too, but I'd really, REALLY want a 21 Summilux to go with it... Having both in ONE lens. I can't think of a better christmas gift. ...are you listening, wifey...?

For all the bashing the Noctilux gets - I can do things with that lens I can't do with others - Leica or not. Leica has a reputation for exotic, jewel like lenses. I have no reason to doubt the new stuff will be just as impressive once it gets into the right hands.

Rolo Posted September 19, 2008 Share #19 Posted September 19, 2008 Wasn't the S1 the Leica SCANNING camera? Why does Leica call the new camera S2 if it isn't the successor of S1? The successor would use at least the same principle for image recording which isn't true for the S2. Quite misleading name. The S2 continues the leap of technology that the S1 started many years ago. It will enable Leica to link their future products to their history in this media. Calling it a T.....X.... or K etc would wipe their heritage. The S1 was there in the beginning and the line all the way to the S99 will be seen as being continuous in the fullness of time. It's a marketing thing, but it's the kind of history that is understandably important to Leica. It also puts a big gap between the S and the R line. It's unlikely that the technology of the S1 will play part in the S2, IMO. An updated badge maybe. Rolo
