earleygallery Posted September 10, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have bought a Summaron 35mm f2.8 'goggled' lens for my M2. I've yet to use it but have been very happy with my 35 Skopar so will be doing a comparison test. A couple of things. What should I expect compared to the VC lens? As I say, it is an excellent lens so I'm doubtful I'll see any improvement, but of course it is a Leica lens so I'm hoping for some 'magic'. I have read that one cannot remove the goggles and use it 'naked' on a M2. What I don't understand is why. If subject X is so far from the plane of film then that is a constant whether there are goggles or no. So why doesn't the lens focus correctly on an M2 if you remove the goggles (frame lines issue aside) ?

andybarton Posted September 10, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 10, 2008 I am happy to lend you my non-goggled example, any time you like, James. YOU do the testing
luigi bertolotti Posted September 11, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 11, 2008 Sorry, but I don't understand why buying a goggled 35 for M2... M2 has the regular 35 frame, and a ungoggled lens is of course easier to manage, carrying and so. Anyway, if you remove the goggles the result is that the lens doesn't focus properly... the goggles alter the effective measuring base of the RF (I verified it with a goggled Summaron 35 3,5... at infinity RF doesn't align). I never tried a CV Skopar, but it's a lens much younger in design than ol' Summaron... so I would expect a comparision not in favor of the Leitz lens (and this is an opinion from a guy like me... ... that owns 4 different Summarons 35... but collecting is a thing... image quality, another...) Philippe D. Posted September 11, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 11, 2008 Sorry, but I don't understand why buying a goggled 35 for M2... James have to buy now a M3... and very soon be a respectable collector.
jc_braconi Posted September 11, 2008 Share #5 Posted September 11, 2008 James, What was told on the Summaron 3.5 /35 for M3 is valid also for the 2.8/35 for M3 have a look at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/48286-summaron-35-2-8-screw-mount-2.html page 2 #

Even with the my M6 ttl I sometimes use the goggled Summicron 35 for the same reasons. Gerry

I hadn't really looked at a goggled lens before but the goggles are rather large! Should've gone the Specsavers ! (uk advert slogan) Anyway, I will try it, comare to the Skopar and and sell one. No, I'm not after an M3, although its the logical choice for a goggled lens.

Would that be a goggled Summicron? I missed one of those on e bay recently - I had been watching the no reserve auction but missed the end - you won't believe me when I tell you it sold for only £127 - I actually did kick myself. bscott Posted September 11, 2008 Share #13 Posted September 11, 2008 It is a Summicron with goggles and that was a good price. One sold on ebay earlier this year for 815.00 dollars and there were 34 bids. I purchased my lens with my M3 years ago and enjoy its use.

Yup, those red velvet stripes are the joy of collectors... the box of my Telyt 400 5,6, dismounted in all its pieces, is full of them...
bkyoung Posted September 12, 2008 Share #15 Posted September 12, 2008 James have to buy now a M3... and very soon be a respectable collector. So sayeth the Leica demon, whispering evilly in the ear of the innocent. Next thing, he'll find himself surrounded by Ms and lenses, circles around his eyes, all other possessions in hock ... and some beautiful pictures. tobey bilek Posted September 12, 2008 Share #18 Posted September 12, 2008 I use a goggled 35 F2.0 because I can see the 50mm frame lines with glasses. Now the entire 35mm image is crowded into the 50mm frame.
