I was reading Luminous Landscape and found this:

"Oh yes, and the Cannon G7 features Face Detection AF/AE technology. What this means is that if you try to take a head shot of someone whom the camera doesn't recognize, the shutter will lock and the camera will display the following message on the rear 2.5" LCD – "Warning! Unrecognized humanoid. Please confirm acceptability of subject". Face recognition. Humbug!"

So so amusing! My goodness. Good thing Leicas don't recognize Homo Sapiens...

The point is that while Cannon keeps adding more and more "useless" features, Leica does what it does best... KEEP THINGS SIMPLE.

(Perhaps face detection is a conspiracy to log us on the national ID database they want next year... fools!)

Albert, I just checked out Leica's digicams on the market. I see a lot of useless features in them too.

I agree Leica made things simple by asking us to change ISO and Exposure Compensation using the LCD menus on their brand new Leica M8 digital rangefinder. Yeah. How much simpler can u get? Use the screen! press the buttons! press once, twice, turn a wheel here, press a third time, and u can put ur eye back to the viewfinder for the next picture :)

And I thought changing ISO on Canon's DSLRs was difficult. It was just a press of a button and a turn of a wheel. No messing with electronic menus but by feel. They even show the ISO change in the viewfinder for convenience! Who needs that? Humbug!

Hi Albert,

Artificial intelligence is an interesting subject, I'm glad you brought it up in this thread.

I do agree with you that Cannon is a forerunner in this field.

Facial recognition, whaw!, if they succeed in it to work flawless, it'll surpass my brains.

What an achievement.

;-)

What good is it to bash another manufacturer's cameras? Not everyone can afford Leica and many who can will not spend the money. Ultimately, photography comes down to the image and the message it conveys. It matters not what brand of camera takes that photograph. What matters is the heart and passion of the photographer himself.

Sorry, not Canon, but Nikon. Nikon first introduced "Face Priority AF" in their compact class digicams, which supposedly allows the AF system to detect faces and give them AF priority rather than the background. Face recognition by any other name......

If this feature ever makes its way into Panasonic's cameras (due to competitive pressure or marketing requirements), we'll see them in Leica's Dlux / Clux whatever.

But because of the red dot, it'll b a ground breaking feature! :)

This is what I meant by calling 'face recognition' a crap feature. Suppose the photographer wants the face to be defocussed. Will the wretched camera overrule them? Clever dick designers are the bane of the world at times like this.
