wlaidlaw Posted September 3, 2008 Author Share #21 Posted September 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Stephen--thanks for the link, but my software lets me listen but not download Wilson-- thanks for the email offer. I've PM'd you my address. This is an aspect of Leica I never would have expected!. I guess this would have been the "rouse 'em with the rah-rah company spirit before they sit down to their benches" daily song? Does anyone have an idea how it was used? Howard, Will send you copy of 1930's song - given climate at the time and high profile users, probably best not to enquire too deeply about song. Will also email you MP4 of Karaoke of Modern Major General so that you can sing-a-long with Peter Klein's song in your bath. You can use Quick Time Pro or iRecordMusic to grab these things off the net. Wilson

Wilson Quite right... its so rousing it kinda makes one want to run out and take pictures of the entire world. Actually I wonder if any of our German speakers might provide a rough gist translation? Great thread. Todd
SJP Posted September 3, 2008 Share #23 Posted September 3, 2008 Howard, This should work http://www.leicapages.com/quicktime/leicasong.mov ('right click', 'save target as' on WinXP, Mac - not the foggiest idea) Also the file leicasong.mov should already be in your browser cache Succes! Andrew Spackman Posted September 3, 2008 Share #24 Posted September 3, 2008 Howard, Will send you copy of 1930's song - given climate at the time and high profile users, probably best not to enquire too deeply about song. Wilson It would be good to have a translation. The song was included on "The Leica Legend" CD-ROM that came out a few years back. The title is "Leica, Leica, mein Begleiter" which is translated as "Leica, Leica, my companion". It also says the lyrics were by Elly Heuss-Knapp, wife of Theodor Heuss who became the first President of the Federal Republic after the Second World War. So I guess the politics will be OK! And if you have heard it you'll be anxious to know that the vocalist is Eric Helgar. No, I'd never heard of him either but he is easily Googled. ho_co Posted September 4, 2008 Share #25 Posted September 4, 2008 Stephen-- My problem is that I'm too cheap to upgrade to a new QuickTime Pro every time Apple updates the program. Wilson-- Thanks for the help! (I'll need to look into iRecord Music.) All-- I've got some German, but this is an old recording and my ears don't perform as well as I'd like. Still, I'll try to decipher it. Andrew-- Thanks for the title! That may give me a bit of intro into the song. "Leica, mein Begleiter" is a half-rhyme in German. Could indicate either humor or dialect. In either case, it would likely raise a smile. Gee, this is much more fun than debating what we want on the M9! SJP Posted September 4, 2008 Share #28 Posted September 4, 2008 Judging by the timing (or lack of) I thoroughly endorse the mugs of beer hypothsis.
ho_co Posted September 4, 2008 Share #29 Posted September 4, 2008 This puts an image in my head of an open tent filled with a bunch of guys wearing lederhosen and singing the Leica song while hoisting large mugs of beer. But there's something vaguely chilling about those guys singing "Leica, Leica, my companion." As if they all had shaved legs or something.
