Digilux 2 file settings?

Pleas excuse me if this is an obvious question, but if I shoot in Raw mode, do the picture adjustments parameters in camera (contrast, sharpness and Saturation) make any difference, or are these setting for use when shooting jpg only?

Many thanks,

John.

No, they don´t affect the raw file. However, the jpeg file that is saved at the same time (and which is what you see on the LCD when reviewing) is affected.

This fact is especially useful when shooting B/W. The jpeg, and thus the viewfinder image, will be B/W and give you a fair idea what you´re getting. But the raw file itself contains all the colour info, and so can be manipulated afterwards, e. g. to simulate the effect of a colour filter.

It is my experience, however, that the Digilux 2 is rather good at shooting in Jpeg mode, and that there is no real need to use RAW.

In daylight, at ISO 100, I tend to (mainly) agree. Artificial light (esp. mixed), and higher ISO´s will be far more difficult to get anything decent out of if one doesn´t use raw.

Also, as I said, if one plans to convert to B/W, far more can be done to a raw file than to a B/W jpeg.

Otoh, I have some pretty good night-shots with it just using in-camera jpegs.

So do I. Please have a look here:

All images on these two sites were made using jpeg, and it did work well. I use RAW mainly in cases where I am absolutely not sure about exposure or white balance, or where I want to achieve a really perfect balance of all parameters without any loss.

Regarding B/W, I've never used RAW files for this. Maybe I should try! :)

Best regards,

Peter.

Very nice images, Peter, but ... were they made with a Digilux 2 (D2) or a D-Lux 2 (DL2) as noted in your thread? :o

Pete.

Thank you, Pete. Aah, the old confusion with the names of the digital cameras... Well, I meant really the Digilux 2.

Some people use the abbreviations the way you quoted, some people vice versa, i.e. DL2 for the Digilux 2 and D2 for the D-Lux 2. I also use DL2 for the Digilux 2, the longer abbreviation for the larger camera... ;)

Best regards,

Peter.
