Mauribix Posted August 24, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, few minutes ago my M8 died! While shooting I've heard a bad metallic sound inside the camera, just the time to remove the lens and I've seen the metallic blades of the shutter horrobly broken inside the camera. Right now I'm in Williams (AZ), do you know where and if it's possible to get it repaired or to rent a substitute nearby or in the San Diego/Los Angeles area? Thanks for your reply, as you may know I'm really down at the moment. Best Maurizio mauribix@gmail.com

Shootist Posted August 24, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 24, 2008 the only place to get it repaired is at Leica. Not even sure Leica USA can do this type of repair. May I ask what were you shooting at 2:30 AM.
zeitz Posted August 24, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 24, 2008 There are a number of authorized Leica dealers in LA. Go to the Leica web site to get a listing. Samy's on Fairfax, north of Wilshire, is a stocking dealer. ie they seem to carry the complete line. The US Leica rep used to be in the store routinely on Friday's. Guest DuquesneG Posted August 24, 2008 Share #10 Posted August 24, 2008 Maurizio, sorry to hear you've become another statistic in the shutter failure saga. It does seem, keeping in mind how few M8 cameras there are compared to Nikons and Canons, and keeping in mind that fewer of the Leicas are in heavy professional use, as if an inordinate number of shutters are self-destructing. A Leica rep told me his boss (Christian) told him the upgrade shutters are supposed to last longer because they run at lower speed. I wonder if Leica would make some price adjustment if you wanted the upgrade instead of warranty replacement of the 8000 shutter, or would they want full price for the upgrade...has anybody asked? Not even sure Leica USA can do this type of repair.May I ask what were you shooting at 2:30 AM. Ed I had an identical problem with my M8 of course while on a vacation trip to Oregon a month ago. The shutter was "destroyed." I sent it off to Leica N.J. where it was repaired. No need to go to Solms. Apparently Leica N.J. is going to be capable of doing all of the M8 upgrades so changing shutters should not be too difficult for them. Problem is that Leica N.J. is not yet ready to do the shutter upgrades so unless you are willing to wait until October you are better off to get a new replacement of the old shutter. earleygallery Posted August 25, 2008 Share #17 Posted August 25, 2008 Why should a shutter fail like this? Assuming that there has been no mis-use, is it a design fault or what?
Shootist Posted August 25, 2008 Share #18 Posted August 25, 2008 Why should a shutter fail like this? Assuming that there has been no mis-use, is it a design fault or what? Everything fails, not only those things that have design flaws. There has been other reports of shutter failure. Some have been spontaneous, some from a dropped camera and other that Leica has said was caused by the user, IE sticking something in the shutter blades. Some of the failure have been tears others a blade comes loose or breaks at it connection point. There are pictures of them floating around on this forum. earleygallery Posted August 25, 2008 Share #19 Posted August 25, 2008 Thanks, I'm aware of the other reported failures, and most if not all appear to have been through no obvious cause, they have just happened. If so that would point to a weakness in the design or fault in the manufacturing of said shutters.

If so that would point to a weakness in the design or fault in the manufacturing of said shutters. Right but to suspect a design flaw is a liitle early for that. AFAIK Leica did not design the shutter, they more then likely reviewed the specs of it and AFAIK Leica doesn't have anyone from Leica at the factory that is building the shutter to check they are being assembled correctly or with the correct parts.
