Chrishayton Posted August 11, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi. Ive just recieved my first leica M camera and its great except the focus patch is not quite centered. Its centered horizontally but not vertically. Its a little high when looking compared to the frame lines ( most noticable on smallest set) Its not out by much and doest proceed past the top of the | | bits of the guidelines. Is this normal?? __...............................__ |.....................................| |...........|""""""""""|............| |...........|_______|............| |.....................................| |_................................._| ^ example diagram. Advertisement Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Hi Chrishayton, Take a look here M3 focus spot high in the viewfinder. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted August 11, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2008 It isn't an uncommon issue. I had this on my first M, an M4-P. It shouldn't affect focusing, to me it was just incredibly annoying. The vertical alignment can be adjusted if you're game. Here is a howto: Leica FAQ - DIY rangefinder adjustment - Carl
gyoung Posted August 11, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 11, 2008 It isn't an uncommon issue. I had this on my first M, an M4-P. It shouldn't affect focusing, to me it was just incredibly annoying. The vertical alignment can be adjusted if you're game. Here is a howto: Leica FAQ - DIY rangefinder adjustment - Carl The way I read it this is not what was meant, its the position of the rangefinder patch that is not centred rather than the vertical alignment of the two images. I have just looked at my M3, the patch is quite a bit above centre, very obvious if the 135 frame is selected, I have never noticed it before in 40 years of using the camera, I presume its normal, all seems to be working anyway. Chrishayton Posted August 11, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted August 11, 2008 The patch lines up with the seperate image, its just the patch is nearer the top of the frame than the bottom. Is this the same issue to correct Edit Ah great. Yes thats what i ment ( to the second poster) so this is normal then? hope so as the camera is fantastic
gyoung Posted August 11, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2008 The patch lines up with the seperate image, its just the patch is nearer the top of the frame than the bottom. Is this the same issue to correct As I said above, I think its normal, maybe others can confirm, I only have one M3! Correction, if necessary would be a strip down and reassembly of the rangefinder, a pretty skilled job Gerry
doubice Posted August 11, 2008 Share #6 Posted August 11, 2008 Don't have my M3 anymore, but can confirm that the rangefinder patch is not perfectly centered along the vertical axis. It does sit a little higher and it is mostly noticeable when the 135mm frame is engaged. Nothing to worry about...... Best, Jan
earleygallery Posted August 11, 2008 Share #7 Posted August 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just checked my M2, it appears ever so slightly towards the upper half of the frame lines (don't forget the patch and framelines move as you focus for parralax correction). I folded a piece of paper to use as a guide, framed it and yes it is just off centre. I've not noticed it before now - it would appear to be how they are designed. StS Posted August 13, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 13, 2008 It's the same with my M3, the focus area is a tad too high. I haven't noticed before either. Stefan
